HICKORY – Hickory and Kannapolis split a South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball doubleheader on Tuesday at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The Crawdads won the first game — which started at 4 p.m. — 1-0, and the Intimidators won the second game 6-1.
The doubleheader drew a crowd of 925 to L.P. Frans Stadium, where the series finale is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
In the opener, Hickory scored the game’s only run in the first inning when Franklin Rollin had a one-out triple and scored on an RBI single by Leody Taveras, who went 2-for-3 to lead the Crawdads.
Hickory limited Kannapolis to four hits, two by Zach Remillard, but the Intimidators went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Kaleb Fontenot pitched three innings in relief, giving up no hits and runs and walking one and striking out three, to get the win for Hickory.
Tyler Ferguson, throwing strikes on 11 of his 14 pitches, threw an inning with two strikeouts to gain his first save of the season for the Crawdads.
In the second game, Kannapolis had a two-run third inning to break a 1-all tie en route to a victory.
Brandon Dulin went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Intimidators, who also got two hits each from Joel Booker and Jameson Fisher.
The top four batters in Kannapolis’ batting order collected all seven of the Intimidators’ hits.
Hickory’s four hits included a triple by Taveras.
Kyle Kubat allowed one hit over two innings of relief and got the win for Kannapolis (27-23), while Crawdads starter Kody Cody (1-6) took the loss (4 1/3 innings, six hits, six runs/six earned with two walks and three strikeouts).
Kannapolis is now 27-23 in the SAL’s Northern Division and the Crawdads are 20-32.
