CRAWDADS: Score a run in each of last 3 at-bats to sink Shorebirds

DELMARVA, Md. – Hickory wiped out a one-run deficit on Saturday night to beat Delmarva (Md.) 5-3 by scoring one run in each of its last three at-bats of a South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball game that drew nearly 4,900.

The Crawdads (21-35) pulled into a 3-all tie in the seventh inning when Carlos Garay, who had two hits, had a one-out double and scored on an error by Shorebirds outfielder Ryan McKenna.

Hickory went up 4-3 in the eighth inning after Ti’Quan Forbes, who had a home run among his two hits, singled, stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Garay.

In the ninth inning, the Crawdads went up 5-3 after Blaine Prescott singled. He scored on a double by Franklin Rollin.

Hickory outhit Delmarva 9-5.

Alejandro Juniver, hitting ninth in the Shorebirds’ order, had two hits and Gerrion Grim hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning for Delmarva.

Forbes’ home run, a solo shot and his seventh of the season, came in the second inning for Hickory.

Luke Lanphere (2-0) pitched four innings to gain a win for the Crawdads, giving up three hits, two runs (both earned) with two walks and three strikeouts. C.D. Pelham picked up his first save of the season after pitching two innings in which he walked one and struck out four.

The Shorebirds’ Tyler Erwin took the loss (two innings, four hits, two runs, no walks, two strikeouts) after relieving starter Zach Muckenhirn (seven innings, five hits, three runs (one earned) with a walk and four strikeouts.

The win leaves Hickory still in last place in the SAL Northern Division, and the Shorebirds are one spot above the Crawdads.

Hickory trails division-leading Hagerstown (Md.) by 12 ½ games, and the Shorebirds are 9 ½ back of the Suns.

The Crawdads close their series at Delmarva on Sunday at 2:05 p.m., and they are off on Monday.

On Tuesday, Hickory begins a Tuesday through Thursday home series by playing Greenville (S.C.), and Lexington, Ky., visits for games Friday through next Monday at L.P. Frans Stadium.
