CRAWDADS: Hammer Kannapolis with 18 hits, including 8 for extra bases

KANNAPOLIS – Only one player in the batting order failed to get at least one hit – and the first four in the order combined for 10 – as the visiting Hickory Crawdads pounded Kannapolis 13-2 on Thursday night.

Closing a four-game series against the Intimidators, the Crawdads (32-46, 5-3 second half) moved into second place behind Hagerstown (Md.) in the South Atlantic League (SAL) Northern Division.

Hickory begins a four-game series against West Virginia on Friday night at 7:05 p.m., and is in Charleston, W. Va., through Monday.

Carlos Garay and Ti’Quan Forbes each went 4-for-5 and Garay drove in four runs in a victory that featured eight extra base hits by the Crawdads.

The first four batters in Hickory’s lineup combined to go 10-for-20 and drive in five runs – leadoff Blaine Prescott (2-for-4), Leody Taveras (2-for-5), Garay and Tanner Gardner (2-for-6, one RBI).

Forbes hit sixth in the lineup and had a double and triple among his four hits, while Anderson Tejeda went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs.

The only player in the lineup for Hickory that did not get a hit was Jose Almonte, hitting No. 8 in the order.

Luis Gonzalez had a double and triple to lead Kannapolis (43-33, 4-4), which fell into a tie for third place in the Northern Division with Delmarva (Md.) and West Virginia.

The Crawdads jumped ahead of the Intimidators 4-1 and pushed that edge to 7-1 in a game that drew 702 fans.

Edgar Arrendondo (4-3) threw five innings to gain a win for Hickory. He gave up five hits, two runs (both earned) with no walks and three strikeouts.

Kannapolis starter Yelmison Peralta (0-1) took the loss after throwing two innings. He gave up eight hits, seven runs (six earned), walked one and struck out one. Reliever Lane Hobbs went four innings (seven hits, four runs, no walks and two strikeouts).

Hickory will have a homestand during the July 4 weekend, starting Tuesday night at 7 p.m. with a game against Kannapolis.

The Crawdads’ weekend games included a 6:05 p.m start on Saturday at the Power, a 2:05 p.m. start there on Sunday and a 7:05 p.m. start there on Monday.
