CRAWDADS: Come home tied for first place, will face Legends next

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Crawdads are back home and tied for first place heading into Thursday night’s game against the Lexington (Ky.) Legends.

Hagerstown (Md.) whipped Hickory 7-1 on Wednesday in a South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball game that left the Suns (59-47, 21-16 second half) and Crawdads (49-60, 22-17) sharing first place in the Northern Division.

Hickory starts at four-game series with Lexington at 7 p.m. on Thursday at L.P. Frans Stadium. The teams also play at 7 p.m. on Friday, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, and a series finale on Sunday at 5 p.m.

On Wednesday morning, Hagerstown limited the Crawdads to six hits — two each by Yohel Pozo and Ricardo Valencia and one each by Brallan Perez and Alex Kowalczyk – in a game that began at 10:30 a.m. before 2,130 fans and in 77-degree temperatures.

Suns starter Ben Braymer (1-0) threw six innings to get a win, allowing four hits, a run (earned) with one walk and three strikeouts. Steven Fuentes pitched three innings, striking out two, to gain his second save.

Hickory scored its only run in the second inning, and the Suns scored a run in the bottom of the third to tie it.

Hagerstown scored three runs in the fifth inning to go up 4-1 and then added two runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth inning for a six-run lead.

Aldrem Corredor went 2-for-4, hitting a solo home run in the third inning (his fifth of the year), for the Suns. Anderson Franco hit a three-run home run, his ninth, in the fifth inning. Blake Perkins added two hits for Hagerstown, and Telmito Agustin drove in two runs.

Reid Anderson (1-8) took the loss for the Crawdads. He pitched five innings, gave up six hits, four runs (all earned) with one walk and three strikeouts.

Hickory, after winning 16-4 and 10-1 in the previous two games against the Suns, went into Wednesday’s game alone in first place and leading the Suns by a game.

Delmarva (Md.) is 20-18 in the second half and in third place.
