WINGATE – Wingate University’s football program in 2020 will include four players from the Greater Hickory area, highlighted by the signing of Fred T. Foard running back Corey Siemer.
The Bulldogs have also signed Freedom offensive lineman Austin Lowery and McDowell multi-position player Richard Handy.
Bunker Hill lineman Aaron Bryant is also headed to Wingate as a preferred walk-on.
Siemer (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) ran for more than 1,000 yards as a senior in seven games, missing games with an injury. As a junior, he had more than 2,000 rushing yards and he finished his prep career with more than 4,800 rushing yards and 54 touchdowns.
Lowery (6-3, 250) was a three-year starter at Freedom, and Handy (6-3, 235) played tight end, fullback and offensive line at McDowell. Handy, a two-year starter, had 43 catches for 591 yards and five scores and ran 58 times for 322 yards and two TDs.
Wingate finished 10-2 overall last season, 7-1 and in second place behind Lenoir-Rhyne in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).
West Florida eliminated the Bulldogs from the NCAA Division II playoffs in the first round, winning 38-17.
