HICKORY – Coming on the heels of a successful Valley Invitational, the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team moved up in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II rankings on Tuesday.

The Red Hawks, ranked 17th in last week’s Division II poll, moved up five spots to No. 12 in this week’s rankings. That’s the second-highest ranking of the season, as CVCC began the season at No. 4.

CVCC had a strong showing, defeating previously 12th-ranked Pasco-Hernando (Fla.) in a five-set match over the weekend in its own tournament. The Bobcats dropped to No. 15 in this week’s poll.

The Red Hawks also played well in the weekend tournament against No. 1 Owens, taking a set off the top-ranked Express before falling 3-1.

CVCC finished the tournament 2-2 overall, including a 3-2 victory against St. Clair County (Mich.) and a 3-0 loss against Division I Wallace State (Ala.).

CVCC is 17-5, including 9-0 in conference play, and heads to the Wallace State Fall Bash in Hanceville, Ala., to play this weekend.
