HICKORY – Milligan’s junior varsity hit six 3-pointers in the first quarter — when Catawba Valley Community College’s shooting was cold — and went on to beat the Red Hawks 72-62 on Wednesday night in women’s college basketball.

Milligan handed CVCC (1-1) its first loss of the season after the Red Hawks, playing on their home floor at the Tarlton Complex, made one of 19 shots in the second quarter (5.3 percent shooting).

Milligan led 41-20 at halftime.

The Red Hawks rallied in the second half, pulling within seven points with five minutes, two seconds to play.

CVCC outscored Milligan 42-31 in the second half but it wasn’t enough.

Starters Shaniya Lester, Tanisha Wall and reserve Zharia Brown each scored 15 points to lead CVCC but Brown was the reserve to score for the Red Hawks.

Teal Davis paced Milligan with a game-high 16 points as one of four Buffs to reach double digits. Megan Pietrowski added 13 points, Emma Kate Brown had 12 and Lauren Baxter contributed 10.

The Red Hawks’ next game is Friday, a conference opener at 5 p.m. at home against Brunswick Community College.
