WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: CVCC runs win streak to 7 with close win at Louisburg

LOUISBURG – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) ran its women’s basketball win streak to seven games on Thursday night, nipping Louisburg 82-78 after leading by 15 points at the half.

The visiting Red Hawks (18-4, 13-1 Region X) won behind freshman forward Zharia Brown’s 16 points. Sophomore guard Shaniya Lester added 14 points, Joyous Wilson and Jada Reid each had 13 and Nikkyana McCaskill scored 11.

Paced by 12 points from Lester, CVCC led 46-31 at halftime.

Louisburg (17-4, 12-4) was within nine points heading into the fourth quarter.

The Hurricanes scored 25 fourth-quarter points — led by six points each from guards Milequa Eason and Kaila Thompson — to challenge CVCC.

McCaskill scored seven points in the fourth quarter to help the Red Hawks win.

Shontai Totten and Teana Lewis both scored 17 points to lead the Hurricanes.

CVCC’s next game is Saturday at 2 p.m. in Raleigh against Wake Tech.
