RALEIGH — While sports teams at Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) have sent athletes to the next level, a familiar tie to the Red Hawks baseball program is taking his talents to an even bigger stage.

Alec Campbell, public address announcer for the CVCC baseball team for the past two seasons, was recently promoted by radio station 99.9 The Fan in Raleigh to serve as the host of the pre- and post-game shows for the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes.

A 2002 Hickory High alumnus, Campbell said sports have been a love since he was a kid.

“Early on, it was more about being an (ESPN) SportsCenter anchor,” Campbell said in a CVCC press release. “That’s what I always wanted to be as a kid.

“I would wake up and watch SportsCenter through and through. I loved it. I loved Dan Patrick. I love Craig Kilborn. He was my favorite SportsCenter anchor at the time.

“I was enamored with that early on.”

It wasn’t until Campbell grew up and attended Elon that he started to develop knowledge of sports radio.

“I didn’t even really know sports radio was a thing,” Campbell said in the release. “I got involved in it when I was in college my senior year as an update guy.

“A guy I knew in college did a show on our campus station. That was my first introduction to sports radio, but it wasn’t something I thought I would do for a career.”

After earning a sports broadcasting degree, Campbell’s sports radio journey has been well traveled with stops at The Score in Chicago, WFNZ in Charlotte, IMG College in Winston-Salem, 92.9 The Game in Atlanta and as a producer for SiriusXM.

“I moved to Chicago when I graduated from college,” Campbell said. “I bartended for a while. I started listening to the sports station up there. I graduated college with a sports broadcasting degree, so I knew I wanted to pursue it as a career.

“I’ve been chasing it. I just went after it and have been pursuing it ever since.”

In December 2015, Campbell was hired as the producer for “Adam & Joe” – the 99.9 The Fan’s afternoon sports show.
