HUDSON – Caron Corpening hit a free throw with 4.3 seconds to play on Wednesday night, pushing Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&T) past visiting Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) 104-103 in men’s basketball.

Corpening, a freshman from Hickory, drew a foul on contact from CVCC’s Steve Ruszala going to the basket in the game’s closing moments. He was at the free-throw line for two shots and made the second one.

CVCC (1-2) attempted to drive the length of the court and put up a shot to win after the go-ahead free throw, but the Red Hawks’ Tyrell Oglesby lost control of the ball to end the game.

It was back and forth between the Red Hawks and Cobras for most of the game with CCC&TI leading 47-45 at halftime. The largest lead by either team was eight points.

Oglesby led CVCC with a team-high 23 points, while Myles Williams added 20 points. Both players made four 3-pointers.

Trevor Willis paced the Cobras (2-1) in victory, scoring all 18 of his points on 3-pointers.

CVCC’s next game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at home against Lees-McRae.
