WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: CVCC rides 5-game win streak into home game on Friday

LOUISBURG – Catawba Valley Community College’s women go for their sixth straight victory on Friday when Brunswick Community College visits for a 6 p.m. basketball game at the Tarlton Complex.

The Red Hawks (12-4, 7-2) ran their win streak to five games with an 87-56 victory at Louisburg College on Tuesday night.

Sherry Johnson led CVCC with 25 points — her ninth 20-point game of the season — while fellow sophomore Danielle Rainey added a career-high 17 points.

CVCC exploded out of the gates against Louisburg (14-4, 7-4), gaining a 27-13 lead after the first quarter. But the Hurricanes roared back in the second quarter to pull within 38-32 at the half.

The Red Hawks outscored Louisburg 29-15 in the third quarter to pull ahead for good when Johnson and Rainey each scored eight points in the quarter.

Forward Zharia Brown also reached double figures for CVCC with 15 points and guards Milequa Eason and Taziah Hardin each added eight points.
