Red Hawks battle Bryant & Stratton in key Region X game in Virginia

HICKORY – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) has a key basketball game on Sunday, going for its 13th straight victory in an afternoon battle with Bryant & Stratton in Virginia Beach, Va.

The Red Hawks are 20-3 overall and 14-1 in Region X after beating Guilford Tech 71-63 on Friday in Hickory, and Bryant & Stratton has the same records as CVCC.

CVCC, ranked No. 14 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has reached 20 wins for the fifth time in the program’s 10 seasons.

On Friday, sophomore forward Sherry Johnson recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 21 points and 15 rebounds. She scored 18 first-half points, helping CVCC lead 43-34 by halftime.

The Red Hawks then led by as many as 22 points, using an 11-0 run to lead 57-35 midway through the third quarter.

Guilford Tech rallied late with a 12-4 run to start the fourth quarter to pull within 64-57 with nine minutes, 54 seconds to play.

CVCC overcame 10-for-28 (35.7 percent) shooting during the second half and made key free throws down the stretch.

The 12-game win streak is the second-longest in CVCC history.

Zharia Brown and Aniya Taylor also reached double figures for CVCC with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Brown was 8-for-8 from the free throw line and also recorded eight rebounds.

J’nail Millner led Guilford Tech (10-13, 6-11) with a game-high 32 points.
