COLLEGE BASEBALL: Wake Tech stops Red Hawks’ winning streak at 6 games

HOLLY SPRINGS – Wake Tech snapped Catawba Valley Community College’s six-game baseball win streak on Sunday, beating the visiting Red Hawks 8-5 at Ting Stadium.

The loss left CVCC 17-8 overall and 4-2 in Region X.

CVCC next plays on Wednesday, against the Lenoir-Rhyne University junior varsity, at the Legion Fairgrounds with a 6 p.m. start on Shuford Elementary Night at Henkel-Alley Field.

On Sunday, the Red Hawks led 1-0 after a a first-inning RBI single from Graham Mitchell scored Garrison Burress.

Wake Tech then responded with four straight runs, including a tying home run by Martin Muzik in the bottom of the first inning and a two-run single by Evan Maley and an RBI double by Niko Petrides in the bottom of the second inning.

The Red Hawks closed wihtin 4-2 after Rod Munoz scored on a double steal attempt in the top of the fourth inning.

Wake Tech answered that CVCC score once again with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including RBI singles from Trevor Lesane, Vizcarron and Petrides.

Down six runs, Red Hawk catcher Brett Macchia attempted to spark a late comeback attempt in the eighth inning, connecting on his first collegiate home run — a two-run blast to right-center field.

Cory Watt also drove in a run on a groundout, but the eighth-inning rally was snuffed out after Muzik caught a live ball foul tipped strike at home plate during Burress’ at bat and threw out Cody Payne at third base.

CVCC starting pitcher Trae Starnes suffered a loss, allowing five hits, seven runs (six earned), four walks and striking out three.
