COLLEGE BASEBALL: Russ homers twice as Red Hawks collect 25th win of season

LANCASTER, S.C. – Kyran Russ homered twice and drove in five runs on Thursday to lead Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) past USC Lancaster, 12-6.

Russ hit a three-run home run in the first inning at Lancaster High and added a solo shot in the fourth inning as CVCC improved to 25-9 overall by winning.

The Red Hawks start a three-game home series against Lenoir Community College with a doubleheader on Saturday at the Legion Fairgrounds.

Game 1 on Saturday at Henkel-Alley Field is a nine-inning battle with a seven-inning game to follow. The series finale on Sunday is a nine-inning game with a noon start.

Admission for all three weekend games is free.

On Thursday, the Red Hawks jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning on Russ’ three-run homer and an RBI double by Graham Mitchell.

USC Lancaster, which hit four home runs, got a two-run shot from Jared Firmstone in the first inning to get within 4-2.

CVCC answered with four runs in the top of the second inning with two scoring on Blake Jeter’s single and a run each scoring via a double by Garrison Burress and a single by Mitchell.

Walker McDowell hit a solo home run in the third inning to get USC Lancaster within 8-3 before Russ hit his team-best eighth homer of the year in the top of the fourth inning to make it 9-3.

Chase Coker hit a solo home run and Firmstrone had a two-run shot in the fifth as the Lancers closed within 9-6.

CVCC added three more runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by Cory Watts’ run-scoring double and a bases-loaded walk to Russ.

He allowed four hits, three earned runs, two walks and struck out two batters in four innings.

CVCC relief pitchers Madisyn Bolin, Hunter Isaacs, Greg Collins, Chris Banks and Timothy Davila finished off the game by tossing an inning each.
