COLLEGE BASEBALL: Red Hawks steal 11 bases in sweep of Belmont Abbey JVs

NEWTON – Eleven stolen bases on Thursday afternoon sparked Catawba Valley Community College’s baseball sweep over the Belmont Abbey College junior varsity.

CVCC won 6-5 in eight innings and 5-1 in seven innings at the Legion Fairgrounds, improving to 10-7 and running its win streak to four games.

The Red Hawks start a three-game series with Wake Tech in Raleigh on Saturday, playing a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. with the third game on Sunday at noon.

CVCC 6, Belmont Abbey JVs 5, 8 inn.

Grant Tilley’s pinch-hit, walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Jamie Sheek from third base, lifting the Red Hawks to their ninth win.

The Red Hawks scored in the first inning when catcher Willie Gordon laced a double to left field, scoring Tyler Campbell (single). During the play, an error in left field allowed Gordon to score.

The Red Hawks scored one run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning. David Kennedy stole home in the fourth inning and Campbell hit a two-run home run in the fifth to make it 5-0.

Cole Chapman had three hits for CVCC and Campbell and Gordon added two each.

The Crusaders roared back in the seventh inning, tying it 5-all on a bases-loaded walk, a hit batter and back-to-back hits.

After a lead-off walk and stolen base by Sheek, Grant Tilley pinch hit and singled for the winning run.

CVCC starting pitcher Austin Blevins tossed five innings, allowing one hit and striking out six. Reliever Myles White earned a win, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings while striking out four and giving up one run on two hits.

The Red Hawks scored all of their runs in the fourth inning to complete the sweep.

With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning, a fielder’s choice by Ryan Healy scored Trent Jones to open the game’s scoring.

Tilley stole home on a double steal for CVCC while back-to-back RBI singles from Jackson Brown and Mason Lyda extended the Red Hawks’ advantage to 5-0 through four innings.

Belmont Abbey scored in the seventh inning on a wild pitch.

Red Hawks starter Chris Banks earned a win, going five innings and striking out seven while allowing no runs on two hits. Reliever Noah Eaker earned a save after striking out three and giving up one run on one hit and two walks.
