NEWTON – A weekend home baseball series pitting Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) against Brunswick Community College has a new schedule.

The first game of a three-game set is now set for Friday at 7 p.m. at the Legion Fairgrounds’ Henkel-Alley Field.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning game, with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

CVCC is 26-16 overall, 10-7 in Region X and 11-7 at home this season.

The Red Hawks won their most recent game, beating Louisburg 9-8 on the road on Tuesday.

Outfielder Jackson Brown and pinch-hitter Ryan Healy had RBI hits in the eighth inning to spark CVCC.

Both teams scored four runs in the first inning, CVCC scoring on hits by Tyler Campbell and Grant Tilley and on two errors by Louisburg.
Charles Lee drove in two runs and Drew Camp drove in one in the first for Louisburg (19-17).

A bases-clearing double to left-center field by Brown gave CVCC an 8-4 lead.

The Hurricanes were within 8-7 with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning (RBI double by Joshua Pittman, RBI single by Phillip Boykin).
Willie Gordon singled in Campbell in the top of the ninth to get CVCC in front 9-7.

A leadoff solo home run by Justin Oakley in the ninth inning cut the Red Hawks’ edge to one run.

Relief pitcher Storm Mace got three straight outs with a runner on base to end the game and snap Louisburg’s win streak at seven games.

Mace gained his first save of the season and Nic Messina picked up his second win.
