COLLEGE BASEBALL: Red Hawks gain 18th win after head coach proposes

NEWTON – Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) head baseball coach Paul Rozzelle got the answer he wanted on the day his team picked up its 18th victory of the season.

ROZELLE

Rozzelle proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Cayley Berry, prior to the Red Hawks’ 11-0, five inning run-rule win over the Lenoir-Rhyne University junior varsity at the Legion Fairgrounds.

She said yes.

CVCC — ranked No. 16 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll — held “Shuford Elementary School Night” at Henkel-Alley Field and Berry, who teaches at the school, threw out the honorary first pitch.

LRU’s JVs challenged CVCC early, loading the bases in the first inning before Red Hawks pitcher Matthew Dailey pitched out of a jam.

CVCC responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by David Graves, his fourth in six games.

After a scoreless second inning, CVCC scored four more runs in the bottom of the third inning, including Jimmy Marcelli’s first home run of the season.

Rod Munoz also had an RBI single during the inning for CVCC. Willie Gordon gained an RBI by walking with the bases loaded, and Blake Jeter’s RBI sacrifice fly scored Graham Mitchell.

CVCC capped its run-rule victory in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring five runs, including a two-run home run by Matt Yarbrough — the first of his CVCC career.

Mitchell also drove in two runs on a double, and Graves added his third RBI on a single.

Dailey and CVCC relief pitcher Thomas Walden held LRU’s bats at bay, allowing just three hits and one walk, and the duo combined to strike out five.

CVCC next plays on Saturday at home, facing Region X rival Pitt Community College. The first two games of that series begins at 1 p.m., with the final game set for Sunday at noon.

Admission to all three games is free.
