COLLEGE BASEBALL: Red Hawks (5-0) unbeaten heading into Sunday’s home games

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Catawba Valley Community College’s baseball team will still be unbeaten the next time it takes the field.

The Red Hawks (5-0) have won all five of their games after sweeping a road doubleheader on Thursday on the road, winning 5-0 in a seven-inning game over the Limestone junior varsity and also 12-0 in a five-inning game.

CVCC’s next games are Sunday against Walters State — a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. (it was originally scheduled for Saturday) – at the American Legion Fairgrounds in Newton.

Powered by home runs from third baseman Graham Mitchell and first baseman David Graves and a one-hit combined pitching performance, the Red Hawks shut out the Saints in seven innings.

CVCC scored a run in the first inning on a single by Cory Watt and added to its lead in the third inning when Rod Munoz scored on a wild pitch.

Mitchell’s two-run blast over the left field wall in the fifth inning also scored Munoz, and Graves followed with a colossal towering shot to left field.

CVCC starting pitcher Hunter Isaacs picked up his first win of the season, allowing one walk and striking out five in three innings.

Red Hawks relievers Nic Messina, Chris Banks, Trent McKay and Conner Hewell combined to close out the final four innings. They allowed one walk, one hit and struck out six.

A diving catch by Munoz in shallow right field during the fifth inning highlighted a strong defensive performance for the Red Hawks.

CVCC 12, Limestone JVs 0

Behind three doubles and four RBIs by shortstop Garrison Burress, the Red Hawks grabbed a run-rule victory.

CVCC scored all of its runs in the first two innings, including four in the first and eight in the second.

Burress doubled home two runs each in the first and second innings to lead CVCC, which had 12 hits.

Mitchell drove in two runs, including one on a triple in the first inning. Graves and Matthew Yarbrough also had RBI hits for the Red Hawks.

CVCC’s pitching was once again dominant (allowed one hit, three walks and struck out 12).

Starting pitcher Madisyn Bolin went 1 1/3 innings for CVCC, striking out two. Thomas Walden pitched in relief of Bolin, striking out a team-high four in 1 1/3 innings.

Greg Collins, Timothy Davila and Chase Covington also had relief appearances for CVCC before Kevin Finzer closed it out in the fifth inning.
