The Red Hawks (8-2) had 15 hits at Henkel-Alley Field, where they will face USC Union again on Saturday in two seven-inning games. Game 1 begins at 1 p.m. at the Legion Fairgrounds.

CVCC catcher Brett Macchia had a team-high three hits and third baseman Graham Mitchell, center fielder Cory Watt and Russ added two hits each.

The Red Hawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double from right fielder David Graves that scored Macchia.

The Bantams (1-4) answered immediately in the top of the fourth inning after Steve Joyner scored on an error in right field.

Tied at 1, Jeter’s solo home run to right field broke the tie. CVCC then scored four runs in each of the next two innings, including a three-run double by Burress — a South Caldwell High product — in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Russ led off the sixth inning with a solo home run, and CVCC added runs on an RBI single from Macchia, an RBI double by Watt and a bases-loaded walk from Burress.

Red Hawks sophomore Harry Hatcher allowed just five hits, one unearned run, one walk and struck eight over five innings.

Relief pitchers Thomas Walden, Connor Hewell and Timothy Davila combined to close out the final four innings. They gave up two hits, a walk and struck out four.
