NEWTON – Running back Quintin Owens left his mark on the Fred T. Foard High football program by averaging nearly 7 1/2 yards every time he took a handoff.
That was usually from Landon Isenhour in 2008, when Ryan Gettys coached the Tigers (9-3) to a state 3A playoff bid, and from Byron Fullenwider in 2009 when Foard went 4-7 under Gettys.
Owens ran for 1,425 yards and 22 touchdowns as a junior in 2008, adding a 95-yard kickoff return TD (against West Lincoln) and 28-yard interception return for a TD (against Maiden).
He ran for 100 to 199 yards three times and for 200 or more in three games – 220 on 20 carries against Hickory, 219 on 12 carries against Bunker Hill and 262 yards on 20 carries against Bandys.
The next year, Owens ran 235 times for 1,558 yards with six games of 100-199 yards, a 270-game on 22 carries against South Caldwell and a whopping 306 yards on 28 carries against Bunker Hill on the road.
Owens had 15 rushing TDs — with 10 of those on runs of anywhere from 34 yards to 80 – and he also added a 49-yard TD reception (against Bunker Hill).
The average yardage of his TDs – 40.4 yards – established Owens as one of the top “big play” players of the 2000s.
