LEGION BASEBALL: Phillips homers 3 times in Mint Hill win over Maiden

MAIDEN – Kobe Phillips homered three times and drove in six runs on Saturday night, leading visiting Mint Hill past Maiden 16-6 in American Legion baseball.

Phillips led Mint Hill’s 22-hit attack and also pitched five innings in relief at Maiden High, giving up one run (earned) with two walks and seven strikeouts, as Maiden fell to 3-7 with its seventh straight loss.

Post 240 had eight hits, led by two from Mac Beam, and Bryson Ledford was the losing pitcher. Ledford threw 106 pitches over five innings, allowing 13 hits, nine runs (eight earned) with three walks and four strikeouts.

The teams combined to leave 25 runners on base, 14 of them by Mint Hill.

Maiden is now idle until Friday, when it plays a doubleheader at Shelby (Shelby High) that begins at 5 p.m.

Post 240 also has games on Saturday and Sunday, facing Hammond (Tenn.) and Hickory on Saturday at Legion Fairgrounds in Newton at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. On Sunday, Maiden is at home against Lincoln County at 7 p.m.
