MAIDEN – Josh Frye was red-hot on Monday night, sparking Maiden Post 240’s final East Division regular season game – a 10-2 home victory over Huntersville – with two hits, five RBIs and by pitching a complete game.
Frye (Statesville Christian) was the star at Maiden High as the Salamanders (15-7, 13-5) moved into position to finish as high as second place in the East Division of Area IV American Legion baseball.
The Salamanders have completed their East Division schedule and play their regular season finale on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Cherryville.
Shelby has clinched the East Division title, and Union County was 11-4 and Gastonia was 8-5 through Saturday. East teams play 18 division games.
The Area IV regular season closes Thursday and pairings for the playoffs – scheduled to begin Saturday – will be determined at an Area IV meeting on Friday night.
Frye, a right-hander, allowed only three hits in a win over Huntersville that snapped a three-game losing streak.
Maiden had 10 hits and didn’t make an error and was aided by Huntersville’s six errors.
Taylor Tibbs (Bluefield State) and Mac Beam (Bandys) each added two hits and one RBI for Maiden and Jay Sipe (Maiden) and Tyler Laws (Statesville Christian) each drove in a run.
The Salamanders broke a 1-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
After Huntersville (6-13, 6-11) scored a run in the top of the fourth and Maiden scored one in the bottom of the inning to lead 5-2, the Salamanders had a five run fifth inning to open a wide lead.
Frye ended up allowing two earned runs, walking two and striking out two as he threw 95 pitches (66 for strikes).
David Campbell had two hits and an RBI and Tanner Ayers had the other Huntersville hit. Ayers took the loss, going 4 2/3 innings. He gave up nine hits, 10 runs (three earned), walked three and struck out four.
Huntersville forfeits weekend game
A twitter post with details about Huntersville Post 321’s results says Lincoln County’s protest of its 5-4 loss on Saturday to Post 321 was upheld by Area IV officials and the Cardinals pick up a forfeit win.
The one-run game was the first of a doubleheader, with the Cardinals winning the second game 6-1.
The post (https://twitter.com/post321baseball?lang=en) said the protest had to do with a player on Huntersville’s roster mistakenly being removed.
