LEGION BASEBALL: Hickory nips Caldwell County for first win of season

Hickory Post 48 got into the win column for the first time on Thursday night in American Legion baseball, nipping Caldwell County 3-1 at the Legion Fairgrounds.

Devin Perdue went seven innings to get a win for Post 48 (1-3). He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out three. Caleb Lutjens picked up a save for Hickory.

Joel Gosda went 2-for-3 to lead Post 48’s hitting and Taiven Canipe, Lutjens and Bryce Stober scored a run each for Hickory.

Carson Vance took the loss for Caldwell County.

Perdue threw 89 pitches in the victory.

Hickory had three straight rainouts to begin the season and started 0-3 with losses of 8-6 at Caldwell County and 12-5 and 10-9 to Randolph County in Asheboro.

Post 48 has two more home games coming up – Sunday at 7 p.m. against Taylorsville and Monday at 7 p.m. against Burke County.

Taylorsville 6, Lenoir Oilers 6: Taylorsville scored five runs in the eighth inning and ended up tied with the Oilers in an exhibition game in Lenoir on Thursday night.

Taylorsville had seven hits but no one in the lineup with more than one, and Jacob Bebber, as a pinch-hitter, and Tyler Campbell each driving in one run.

For the Oilers, leadoff hitter Stephen Parker went 3-for-5 and Shamarii Thomas added two hits.

Lenoir scored five runs in the first inning and led 6-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning.

Taylorsville made one error and the Oilers had four.

Ryan Ricer hit a home run for Lenoir.

Post 170 used five pitchers with starter Grant Strader going 2 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits, five runs (all earned) with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Oilers used six pitchers with starter Tyler Nigro pitching four innings. He gave up two hits, one run (earned) with eight talks and four strikeouts.

Taylorsville’s next game, set for Saturday at Rutherford County, has been postponed due to R-S Central High playing in the state 2A best-of-3 championship series this weekend.

Post 170 will play at Hickory Post 48 at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Legion Fairgrounds in Newton.
