NEWTON – Cherryville Post 100 just keeps on winning in American Legion baseball.
On Sunday afternoon, Cherryville nipped Hickory Post 48 at the Legion Fairgrounds 6-4 and ran its win streak to 12 games.
Robbie Cowie got a pitching win and Matt Bumgarner a save in an Area IV victory that left Cherryville 12-1 overall and Post 48 at 5-9 heading into a doubleheader on Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Henderson County at East Henderson High.
Post 48, playing its third game in two days, had an early 2-0 lead after Bryce Stober drove in two runs in the second inning.
Cherryville was within 2-1 entering the fifth inning and got RBIs from Cowie, Colton Stroupe and Bumgarner and gained a 5-2 lead.
Hickory closed within 5-4 in the seventh inning via RBIs from Jacoby Fuller and Austin Houser before Post 100 added a run in the eighth inning on a single by Austin Treadway.
Post 48 has four home games this week: Wednesday against Wilmington at 7 p.m., Friday against Rutherford County at 7 p.m., and a Saturday doubleheader (2 p.m.) against Asheville.
The Area IV regular season is scheduled to end on June 29.
Lincoln County 3, Maiden 3: At Maiden on Sunday, the Cardinals and Post 240 had their game suspended in the fourth inning.
No date for the game completion has been announced.
Maiden is scheduled to play a home game at 7 p.m. on Monday at Maiden High, facing the Gaston Braves.
