Alexander Central High has six players in its lineup hitting at least. 429 – and a team batting average of .426 with 31 home runs – as it heads into a best-of-3 series for the state 3A softball championship this weekend in Greensboro.
The Cougars (26-5), seeded third from the West, face East No. 5 seed Cleveland (21-3) for the state title at UNC Greensboro.
Game 1 of the series is Friday at 5 p.m., Game 2 is Saturday at 11 a.m. and a third game, if needed, is
set for Saturday at 5 p.m.
Senior Julie Gast leads Alexander Central, hitting .568 with eight home runs and 49 RBIs, and junior Lanie Goforth is hitting .541 with five home runs and 29 RBIs.
Sophomore Mattie Starnes (.446), senior Kelsea Dejarnette (.436) and sophomore Ashley Seagle (.429) are also hitting better than .400 for the Cougars, who are on a six-game win streak.
Starnes has driven in 28 runs, Dejarnette has three home runs and 33 RBIs and Seagle has four home runs and 34 RBIs.
Alexander Central is in pursuit of its 10th state softball championship (slo-pitch and fast-pitch).
