Winning at home 3-1 on Tuesday over Kings Mountain, the R-S Central High girls’ softball team locked up no worse than a share of the South Mountain Athletic 2A-3A regular season title.
The Hilltoppers improved to 12-1 in the conference and maintained a three-game lead over second-place Crest (9-4) with three games to go in a 16-game conference schedule.
Crest is the only team that could win all of its remaining league games and share the title with the Hilltoppers if they were to fall in all three of their remaining SMAC 2A-3A games.
R-S Central has a non-league game on Wednesday at McDowell (6 p.m.) and could grab an outright SMAC 2A-3A regular season title by beating East Burke on Friday at 6 p.m. in Icard.
Crest 10, East Burke 8: The Chargers widened their lead in second place over East Burke by winning on Tuesday at Crest.
At 9-4 in league games, Crest is still in contention for a regular season title. The Chargers are one game up on third-place East Burke (8-5).
Crest plays Friday at East Rutherford, while R-S Central visits East Burke for a 6 p.m. game.
East Burke must defeat R-S Central to keep the Hilltoppers from locking up an outright league title.
