Maiden High’s girls volleyball team opened the South Fork 2A schedule on Tuesday, beating Bandys 3-0 at Maiden, to run their win streak in conference matches to 30.
Kylie Morgan and Evan Sherrill combined for 21 kills on Tuesday night, sparking Maiden High’s 3-0 home victory over Bandys that opened the South Fork 2A girls’ volleyball schedule for both schools.
Morgan had 11 kills, Evan Sherrill had 10 and three blocks and Faith Herman added 32 assists as the Blue Devils won 25-10, 25-22, 25-20.
Maiden (4-1) won a conference championship last season in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A, and the Blue Devils’ win streak in league matches reached 30 with the win over the Trojans on Tuesday.
Maiden went 14-0 in league play each of the last two seasons after going 11-3 the year before that in conference play. The Blue Devils’ last league loss was 3-0 at Bunker Hill in the SD-7 2A in regular-season match in October of 2014.
The Blue Devils have a home non-conference match Wednesday at 6 p.m. against South Iredell and travel to West Lincoln on Thursday for a 6 p.m. conference match.
Bandys plays its first South Fork 2A home match on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Newton-Conover.
Lincolnton 3, Newton-Conover 1: The Wolves won their South Fork 2A opener on the road.
Lincolnton goes to East Lincoln for a league match at 6 p.m. on Thursday while the Red Devils are on the road, also for a conference match, at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Bandys.
East Lincoln 3, Lake Norman Charter 0: At East Lincoln, the Mustangs won 25-12, 25-21, 25-17 to open South Fork 2A play.
East Lincoln meets Lincolnton at East Lincoln in a league match at 6 p.m. Thursday, and Knights entertain North Lincoln on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Hickory 3, McDowell 0: The Red Tornadoes won on the road in a Northwestern 3A-4A opener, 25-21, 25-16, 25-8.
Makayla Malbon led Hickory with 11 kills and Olivia Pisel had 15 assists and five aces. Kendall White led the Red Tornadoes’ in digs with 13 and Morgan Anderson provided a team-high 13 assists.
St. Stephens 3, Freedom 0: The Indians won a Northwestern 3A-4A opener in Morganton, 25-20, 25-9, 25-2.
Lexie Hall led St. Stephens with 11 digs and seven aces and Madi Bolch had five kills and five aces.
Avery Jackson posted 11 digs, Sydney Otterberg had eight kills, Sam Wilson provided 10 assists and Kenly Killian had seven assists for the Indians (5-3, 1-0).
The Indians’ junior varsity won 2-0.
Next up for St. Stephens is a home league match at 6 p.m. against McDowell on Thursday.
Freedom travels to Hickory on Thursday for a 6 p.m. conference match.
Alexander Central 3, South Iredell 2 (late Monday): The visiting Cougars got big games from Kelsea Dejarnette, Ashlee Falls and Sage Harrington to beat the Vikings 25-16, 14-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11.
Dejarnette had 12 kills, four blocks, two aces and 11 digs, Falls contributed 11 kills, two aces and 14 digs and Harrington provided 10 kills, three blocks and an ace in the non-league victory.
Also for Alexander Central, Chesney Millsaps had six kills, eight blocks and two aces, Kacey Payne posted 45 assists, two aces and 15 digs and libero Emma Farmer delivered 18 digs.
South Iredell won the junior varsity match 25-14, 25-12.
BOYS SOCCER
Patton 9, Freedom 0: The host Panthers blanked the Patriots in a non-league match, scoring four first-half goals, to remain unbeaten at 6-0.
Patton goes to West Henderson on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. match while Freedom meets Draughn at the Catawba River Soccer Complex on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Maiden 4, East Burke 1: At East Burke, the Blue Devils won a non-conference match.
Matthew Lee had East Burke’s goal on a penalty kick while Jonathan Salgado made eight saves and Samuel Miller had five for the Cavs (0-7).
East Burke plays at West Lincoln on Thursday night.
Maiden’s next match is Sept. 7 at home against Hibriten at 6 p.m.
