DEAL
BILOXI, Miss. — Hayden Deal is throwing strikes and keeping opponents settled for the most part this season with the Mississippi Braves.
Deal — a former star left-hander from Bandys High signed as a free agent by Atlanta — is consistently posting good numbers in Double A.
He is 1-0 this season with an ERA of 2.00 in six games, going nine innings and striking out 11.
He last pitched on Wednesday, going 1 1/3 innings as the second Mississippi pitcher used in a 4-2 win at Biloxi, where the Braves are playing through the weekend.
Before a small crowd (1,444), Deal came on in the fifth inning. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one and threw strikes on 18 of 26 pitches.
It was the 124th pro appearance for Deal, who is 24-17 for his career with an ERA of 3.25. His is primarily a reliever but has also made 48 starts in the minor leagues with 344 strikeouts in 385 innings pitched.
He was signed as a free agent after a tryout at Bandys after his college career at Presbyterian (S.C.) ended), and is in his sixth season of actual minor league pitching (missed 2020 when COVID wiped out the minor league year).
Last season, he went 3-2 for Mississippi with an ERA of 4.12, pitching 59 innings with 26 walks and 53 strikeouts. He had two saves.
