LAKEWOOD, N.J. – JoJo Romero used his 89 pitches on Friday night effectively, limiting Hickory to four hits, as Lakewood (N.J.) blanked the visiting Crawdads 6-0 in South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball.
Romero (5-1) gave up four hits, walked none and struck out 10 as the BlueClaws (38-30) won and held onto second place in the SAL’s Northern Division.
Kannapolis leads the division, Lakewood is a game back and Greensboro is two back of Kannapolis in the race for a first-half title that continues this weekend.
Hickory (27-41) — which plays at Lakewood on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. — will finish in last place in the Northern Division.
Raul Rivas drove in two runs to lead Lakewood’s hitting, and a three-run sixth inning doubled the BlueClaws’ lead.
Batting No. 9 in the order, Blaine Prescott had two of the Crawdads’ hits while Eric Jenkins added a double and Franklin Rollin had the other hit.
Hickory was 0-for-1 with runners in scoring positon as the BlueClaws won before a crowd of 5,524.
Walker Weickel (0-1) took the loss for Hickory, pitching 5 1/3 innings. He gave up five hits, five runs (all earned) with three walks and three strikeouts.
