The state girls’ high school softball playoffs are over for Fred T. Foard and Maiden.

On Friday, visiting West Iredell nipped Foard 6-4 in the second round of the 3A bracket, while R-S Central shutdown visiting Maiden 8-0 to win in a 2A game shortened by rain.

No. 9 West Iredell (14-8) advances to play No. 13 Sun Valley (16-6) or No. 3 Enka (19-2) next week in the third round – at home if Sun Valley wins and at Enka if the Sugar Jets win on Saturday night.

No. 5 R-S Central (19-2) gets No. 13 Black Mountain Owen (14-3) or No. 4 Lake Norman Charter (18-2) in the third round, at home if Owen wins or at Lake Norman Charter.

2A

No. 14 Draughn (16-6) at No. 3 Forbush (19-2): Postponed, reset for Saturday at 7 p.m., with the winner gaining a home third-round game against No. 26 South Stokes (14-12).

No. 15 East Lincoln (16-7) at No. 2 West Wilkes (24-1): Postponed, will be played Saturday at 2 p.m., with the winner next facing No. 12 Brevard or No. 6 Parkwood.

4A

No. 20 Hopewell (13-7) at No. 7 South Caldwell (20-6): Postponed, play at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Hudson with the winner advancing to next battle No. 3 North Davidson (23-5), a 12-2 winner on Friday over No. 21 Greensboro Page in five innings.

THIRD ROUND

4A

Cougars still alive: No. 1 Alexander Central (25-3) learned Friday who its next opponent will be – No. 5 seed Southwestern Guilford (21-3), after it beat No. 23 West Forsyth 8-1 in the second round.

The third-round game must be played by Tuesday in Taylorsville.

If the Cougars win, they’ll be at home, game by Friday, to play No. 3 North Davidson (23-5), which will next face Saturday’s No. 20 Hopewell (13-7) at No. 7 South Caldwell (20-6) winner.

Mooresville waiting: The 10th-seeded Blue Devils (20-3) find out Saturday night who they will face next week in the third round, No. 19 Hough (16-8) or No. 6 Charlotte Catholic (17-4), who play Saturday at 7 p.m. at Catholic.

If Hough wins, the Blue Devils gain a home game; if Catholic wins Mooresville travels to Charlotte.
