HICKORY – Using a trick play at the end, Lenoir-Rhyne University beat visiting Wingate 21-17 on Saturday in the NCAA Division II football playoffs to earn a trip to Georgia.
LRU scored the game-winning points with less than one minute to play on a double reverse flea flicker.

On that play, quarterback Grayson Willingham handed the ball off initially, got it back and threw toward receiver Riley McGee. McGee jumped to battle a defender in the right side of the end zone and collected the ball for a 32-yard TD.
The Bears rallied after trailing 10-0 early.
LRU (12-1), seeded No. 3 in the Super Two Regional, advances to battle top-seeded Valdosta (Ga.) State on Saturday at Valdosta State (game time to be announced).
Valdosta State (11-0) reached the third round on Saturday by beating No. 4 Bowie State 66-16.
The other regional finalists are:
- No. 7 Slippery Rock at No. 1 Notre Dame (Ohio) in Super Regional No. 1
- No. 7 Ferris State at No. 1 Ouchita Baptist in Super Regional No. 3
- No. 2 Tarleton State at No. 1 MSU-Mankato in Super Regional No. 4.
The LRU-Valdosta State winner meets the Slippery Rock-Notre Dame winner in a semifinal on Dec. 8 at the highest seed.
The NCAA Division II championship game is Dec. 15 at McKinney ISD Stadium in McKinney, Tex., with a 4 p.m. kickoff and will be broadcast live on ESPNU HD/ESPN3.com.
