Clarity: Foard baseball champion in Northwestern 3A-4A this season

HobbsDailyReport.com

NEWTON — Fred T. Foard High’s baseball team won an outright Northwestern 3A-4A regular season title by beating St. Stephens 16-14 on Friday but some factual information about the Tigers in a recently published report — not appearing on this website nor generated by this website — is inaccurate regarding:

  • Foard did not win the 2009 Catawba Valley Athletic 2A-3A baseball title. The Tigers finished in a three-way tie for third place in the regular season with Hickory and Maiden as Hibriten and Patton finished first and second, respectively. Patton defeated Foard in the conference tournament final that year, Channon Vogel’s first season as Foard baseball coach after he replaced Marcus Greer.
  • At 14-5-1, the Tigers currently have their best winning percentage in Vogel’s tenure but they won more games (17) in both 2014 and in 2009. Their most wins, dating back in 20 seasons of available records, was 25 in 2006. Foard’s 2007 team won 19 games.
  • The Northwestern 3A-4A does choose to recognize a 3A and a 4A winner in each sport, the top-finishing team is not a conference champion as recognized by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). In combination leagues, the team that has the best record, regardless of classification, is the conference champion. South Caldwell (4A) won the 2014 Northwestern 3A title and Foard, a 3A school, finished in second place.
