Draughn QB sets single-game passing record in loss

North Iredell High survived a touchdown by West Iredell in the final seconds on Thursday night, nipping the visiting Warriors 10-9 in a non-conference football game.

After Spencer Morrison hit a 25-yard field goal with under five minutes to play, the Warriors scored on a 10-yard run by Emmanuel Long with 12 seconds to go and the Red Raiders (3-2) won when the PAT failed to tie it.

Quez Summers, who had a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter for West Iredell (2-3), was wide left on a PAT that would have tied it at 10.

North Iredell used a turnover to erase a 3-0 deficit. Just before halftime, the Red Raiders scored on a 1-yard run by Donya’ Stevenson that followed a fumble recovery on a punt attempt.

Spencer Morrison kicked a 25-yard field goal after a North Iredell drive that started the second half, pushing the Red Raiders’ lead to 10-3.

West Iredell quarterback Eli Kitchens completed 20 passes and threw for more than 180 yards, hitting Shidarius McHenry seven times for almost 90 yards.

The Warriors – now 10-29 under Monte Simmons, who is in his fourth season as head coach – start Northwestern Foothills 2A play at home on Friday night (7:30 p.m.) against winless Draughn.

West Lincoln 48, East Burke 0

The Rebels continued hot, gaining a 4-0 start by overwhelming the visiting Cavs.

Running back Nakathon Phansook scored three rushing TDs and Brendon Ikard intercepted three passes to lead West Lincoln’s defense.

Phansook ran for more than 170 yards as West Lincoln gained its first 4-0 start since 2013.

Quarterback Seth Willis threw for a TD and Ikard ran one of his picks back 34 yards for a TD.

Unofficially, Phansook ran for 1,421 yards and 12 TDs a year ago for the Rebels.

West Lincoln opens South Fork 2A play on Friday night at 7:30, facing North Lincoln on the road.

East Burke (1-4), which won its opener 42-0 over West Caldwell, has an open date Friday. The Cavs meet West Iredell on the road on Sept. 28 to open their Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule.

Avery County 32, Draughn 28

Sam McCollum ran for 169 yards, sparking the Vikings (1-4) over the visiting Wildcats (0-5) in a non-conference game moved up to Wednesday night.

The teams combined for 38 points in the opening quarter with Draughn leading 20-18.

Avery County led 25-20 at the half and the Wildcats were up 28-25 heading into the final quarter.

Draughn, still searching for the first win for head coach Chris Powell, outgained the Vikings 418-251 but was hurt by three turnovers.

Junior quarterback Brandon Cox set a school single-game record, throwing for 312 yards. He completed 20 of 36 passes, two for scores, and hit Colton Singleton 10 times for 136 yards and Khe-nai Banks on six passes for 114 yards.

Cox has 837 yards passing in five games.

Draughn had two key turnovers inside the Avery County 10, one on an interception and one on a fumble.

The Wildcats — who scored eight points in their first two games but 66 in their last two – begin their Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., playing West Iredell at Draughn.

East Rutherford 34, Patton 7

Demetrius Mauney ran for more than 160 yards and ran for three TDs to lift the visiting Cavs (5-0) handed the Panthers (2-3) their second straight loss.

East Rutherford led 13-7 at the half after Mauney ran for scores and he added a third-quarter TD run.

Mauney is averaging 11.6 yards per carry this season (64-745) and has 10 rushing TDs.

Patton’s only score opened the scoring with Weston Fleming scoring a rushing TD.

Cameron Simmons and Jayden Waddell adding TD runs in the second half for the Cavs.

Jamir Epps’ 24 rushing yards led Patton’s offense.

Patton starts its Northwestern Foothills 2A schedule on Friday at Fred T. Foard at 7:30 p.m.
