Girls’ wrestling invitational tournament added on 1-year trial basis

CHAPEL HILL – Key decisions voted on by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) board of directors, which completed two days of meetings on Thursday, as reported by the NCHSAA:
- Officials’ fees increased: Approved an increase in varsity officiating fees in football and basketball, bringing the NCHSAA into better alignment with other state associations in the southeast and aiding in an effort to recruit and retain officials. Adjustments were also made to playoff officiating fees beginning in the third round when neutral crews are assigned in an effort to compensate officials for the extra distance traveled. Effective for 2019-2020 school year.
- Helmets for baseball, softball coaches: Mandated baseball and softball coaches in the coaching box on the field must be wearing a helmet or hard skull cap-style helmet during play for safety. Effective immediately.
Volleyball limitations clarified: Adjusted the tournament regulation and weekly limitation for volleyball, creating more clarity as to what is allowed with regard to tournament play.
- Girls’ wrestling: Approved a one-year trial for an NCHSAA girls’ wrestling Invitational in conjunction with N.C. Wrestling Coaches Association (NCWCA) and the N.C. chapter of USA Wrestling.
- Investment policy revised: Revised the NCHSAA Investment Policy Statement, as advised by NCHSAA Investment Management Groups, to allow more flexibility for those managing NCHSAA investments as they face increasing market volatility.
- Subcommittees: Heard reports from board subcommittees tasked with examining and crafting a policy for Home School and Transgender Participation. The board has tasked the staff with further formatting draft policies and seeking feedback from City/County ADs and selected membership groups.
- Classification appeals, etc.: Classification appeals, adjustments and conference placement requests from member schools were addressed as stipulated for the midpoint of each four year alignment cycle. A list of the decisions:
Burns: Request to be reclassified from 3A to 2A was approved. Effective 2019-2020 Burns will compete in the Southwestern 2A.
Christ the King: Request for conference placement in a 1A Conference was approved. Effective 2019-2020, school will compete in the Southern Piedmont 1A and football-only Conference A.
Durham Hillside: According to Articles of Incorporation Bylaw VI, Board approved Hillside be reclassified from 3A to 4A. Effective 2019-2010 Hillside will compete in the Triangle 6 4A.
McMichael: Request to be reclassified from 3A to 2A was approved. Effective 2019-2020, McMichael will compete as a 2A member of the Mid-State 3A.
Monroe: Appeal to move from 3A to the 2A Classification was denied.
Montgomery Central (West and East Montgomery): Approved placing the newly formed in the 3A Classification for the 2019-2020 year. Effective 2019-2020, Montgomery Central will compete in the Rocky River 2A, as requested, but board placed stipulations on their qualification for playoffs in team sports.
Eden Morehead: Request to be reclassified from 3A to 2A was approved. Effective 2019-2020, Morehead will compete as a 2A member of the Mid-State 3A.
North Forsyth: Request to be reclassified from 3A to 2A was approved. Effective 2019-2020, North Forsyth will compete in the Western Piedmont Athletic 2A.
North Henderson: Appeal to move from 3A to 2A was denied.
Parkwood: Appeal to move from 3A to 2A was denied.
Southwestern Randolph: Appeal to move from 3A to 2A was denied.
Waynesville Tuscola: Appeal to move from 3A to 2A was denied.
Vance County: Approved placing Vance County into the 3A Classification following the merger of Northern Vance and Southern Vance last year. Effective 2019-2020, Vance County will compete in the Big 8 3A.
Warren County: Request to be reclassified from 2A to 1A was approved. Effective 2019-2020, Warren County will compete as a 1A member in the Northern Carolina 1A/2A.
West Caldwell: Request to be reclassified from 3A to 2A was approved. Effective 2019-2020, West Caldwell will compete in the Northwestern Foothills 2A.
