CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has suspended athletic events until at least May 18 following an order by Governor Roy Cooper.

In a press release, the NCHSAA said Cooper’s executive order closing all public schools in the state through May 15 further extends the first possible dates athletic events could return.

All of the moves are related to the coronavirus.

In a statement, NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker said: The NCHSAA Board of Directors and staff will use the next few weeks to weigh our future decisions based on the new directions given by Governor Cooper, other government leaders, and organizations charged with public health and safety during this unprecedented time.

“Such decisions will include the possible resumption of spring sports’ competition and the possibility of holding the state basketball championships.

“While we remain hopeful that we will be able to resume competition, particularly for our senior student-athletes, we also recognize the need to protect the health and safety of our students, coaches and the communities we serve.”

The state basketball championship games were originally scheduled for March 14 in Chapel Hill and Raleigh, but postponed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Those eight games include a state 2A girls’ game between Newton-Conover and Farmville Central and a state 3A boys’ game between Freedom and Fayetteville Westover.
