NEWTON – Fred T. Foard High’s girls, needing a win to stay in the chase for a Northwestern 3A-4A soccer championship, got one on Wednesday night.
The Tigers, playing at home, nudged South Caldwell 2-1 behind goals by Hannah Beard and Audrey Sigmon.
Charity Crutchfield had an assist for the Tigers and Erin Robinson made four saves in goal.
For South Caldwell, Taylor Austin scored and Brooklyn Everheart had six saves in goal.
Foard improved to 8-3-0 in the league and trails Hickory (9-2-0), while South Caldwell fell to 6-5-0 in the conference and is in fifth place.
The league plays at 14-game schedule.
Foard has a makeup league match at St. Stephens on Thursday at 6 p.m., and plays Friday at Patton at 6 p.m.
The Spartans have a home conference match on Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Watauga.
League play continues through the middle of next week.
