HICKORY – Fred T. Foard and St. Stephens will retake the field on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. to finish up a Northwestern 3A-4A high school baseball game.

Thursday night’s game at St. Stephens was interrupted by rain in the fourth inning with the Tigers — who need a win to close out the league regular season title — leading 13-0.

Foard (13-5-1, 11-2) is a game up on South Caldwell (15-4-1, 10-3) in a race for the championship.

South Caldwell’s home game on Thursday against Watauga was rained out and is reset for Saturday at noon in Hudson.

If Foard closes out by beating the Indians (9-12, 5-8) on Friday, the outcome of Saturday’s game in Hudson will be a moot point.

At this point, Foard has already assured itself of gaining the No. 1 state 3A playoff bid from the conference because the only team still in contention, South Caldwell, is 4A.

South Caldwell has the top 4A playoff seed because Watauga, the other 4A member of the conference, is 4 ½ games back of the Spartans in the standings.
