NPC 3A-4A SOFTBALL: Cougars nip Mooresville, stay atop conference standings

MOORESVILLE – Alexander Central High answered the call on Thursday in girls’ softball, winning a key North Piedmont 3A-4A game on the road over Mooresville, 4-3.

Brittney Krider had two hits and drove in two runs and Kendra Mayes remained unbeaten by throwing a complete game for the Cougars, who are 10-1 and in first place in the league.

Mayes (13-0) allowed five hits, three runs (none earned), walked three and struck out three.

Mooresville grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before the Cougars got a run in the second and another in the third for a 2-all tie.

The Cougars went up 3-2 with a run in the fifth inning and added a run in the sixth inning to beat Mooresville for the second time this season.

Alexander Central had six hits and made two errors and the Blue Devils had five hits and made three errors.

Alexis Walker and Kelsea Dejarnette each had an RBI for Alexander Central, now 20-1 overall.

For Mooresville, Hailey Lane had two hits and Caitlyn Mann had a hit and the Blue Devils’ only RBI.

Joelle Davis took the loss after throwing a complete game for Mooresville. She allowed four runs (one earned), walked none and struck out one.

The NPC 3A-4A plays a 14-game schedule and the worst the Cougars could go would be 10-4. Every other team in the conference except Mooresville and Lake Norman already has at least five conference losses.
