TAYLORSVILLE – Trae Starnes’ 1-hitter led Alexander Central High to a 10-0 baseball victory over visiting Statesville on Wednesday night.
Starnes gave up only a hit to the Greyhounds’ leadoff hitter, R.J. Conner, and the Cougars rolled to stay in second place in the North Piedmont 3A-4A.
Alexander Central (15-8, 10-3) is a game behind first-place Lake Norman (18-3, 11-2) with one conference game to go.
The Cougars face West Iredell on the road on Thursday at 7 p.m., while Lake Norman closes at home against North Lincoln on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Alexander Central had 13 hits against Statesville, with Grayson Chapman going 4-for-4 with an RBI, Tyler Campbell going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Matt Fedora going 2-for-2 and driving in two runs.
Joe Gaither took the loss for the Greyhounds (1-16, 1-12), who share last place with West Iredell.
The Cougars led 6-0 after a three-run third inning and were up 9-0 after three more runs scored in the fifth.
