MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Wingate wins at Lenoir-Rhyne, ending Bears’ 24-match conference streak

HICKORY – Wingate snapped Lenoir-Rhyne University’s 24-match win streak in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season men’s lacrosse on Saturday, beating the Bears 11-8.

The loss was the first for LRU in a SAC regular season match since April 11, 2015 when Catawba beat LRU.

Wingate improved to 5-1 overall and won its league opener while dropping the Bears to 0-5, 0-1.

The Bulldogs had an early 3-1 lead but LRU scored the next six goals for a 7-3 lead.

Eric Dickinson scored four goals in that six-goal stretch for the Bears, including back-to-back goals just 51 seconds apart. He scored three times in one minute, eight seconds.

After that, though, Wingate’s defense tightened and LRU scored only once over the final 38 minutes.

Ben Austin scored with 6:59 left in the third quarter to get LRU within 9-8.

Wingate also had a 6-0 run to go in front 9-7.

Quinn Kuhn scored twice for the Bears and Weston Bimstefer caused three turnovers.

Wingate was paced by four goals and an assist from Alex Llerandi and three goals and two assists by Conor Gronbach. Alex Coredero made 16 saves for Wingate.

The Bulldogs won 13 of 23 face offs while LRU was 20-for-20 on clears.

Each team had 24 shots on goal and the Bears led in total shots 43-37.

LRU’s next match is at home on Saturday, facing league foe Tusculum at 2 p.m.
