WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Belmont Abbey hands Lenoir-Rhyne first loss

BELMONT – Belmont Abbey scored its goals about 55 minutes apart and held on to beat visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University 2-1 on Saturday in women’s soccer.

Morgan Patton’s goal on an assist by Kooba Richard had the Crusaders (3-1) ahead 1-0 at the 22:59 mark.

The lead increased to 2-0 when Nicole Ferren scored unassisted at the 77:07 mark for Belmont Abbey.

At the 85:15 mark, Helen Ramsey scored on an assist by Madi Kyle for the Bears (3-1) but they fell despite outshooting the Crusaders 25-13.

Alayna Morris had five saves for LRU, ranked No. 21 in NCAA Division II, and Kaitlyn Paul recorded nine for Belmont Abbey.

The Bears start South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. match in Salisbury against Catawba.
