HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF: N-C leads 1A/2A championships after first round

Newton-Conover High has a nine-stroke lead after the opening round of the state girls’ 1A/2A golf championships in Longleaf on Monday.

The Red Devils head to Tuesday’s final round with three golfers in the top 20, led by Sandra Uon (82, tied for eighth). Celeste Little is tied for 15th after an 88 and Hailey Hicks is tied for 19th after shooting 90.

Newton-Conover’s score of plus 47 is well ahead of Raleigh Charter (56), and West Lincoln is fifth (70).

West Lincoln’s Reese Coltrane is in 11th after an opening round of 85.

Katelyn Griggs of Gray Stone Day is the individual leader with a 3-over par 74. She’s one stroke up on Madison Logan of Hayesville.

Lillian Bowman of Hickory opened with a round of 87 at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club and she is in 12th place.

Wilson Fike is leading with a plus-69, six strokes up on Rockingham County, with North Lincoln (103) in eighth place and Hibriten (104) in ninth place.

Emily Mathews of Eastern Alamance tops the leaderboard at 3-over par 75, leading Salem Lee of Asheboro by one stroke.

Ellie Hildreth of Wilmington Hoggard fired a 5-under 67 to lead the individual race at Pinehurst No. 5.

Sophie Lauture of Cox Mill and Elizabeth Russell of Myers Park share second place after rounds of 71.

Winston-Salem Reagan is tied for first place (plus-9) with Cardinal Gibbons.
