WINSTON-SALEM – Scoring twice on punt returns and once on defense, West Iredell High rolled to a season-opening varsity football win on Monday night by downing Winston-Salem Atkins 42-0.
The visiting Warriors scored 28 points in the opening quarter, including on a 30-yard interception return and 20-yard punt return by William Barber.
Zack Carr returned a punt 60 yards for a TD that made it 28-0 by halftime.
Quarterback Eli Kitchens threw scoring passes of 11 and 40 yards in the third quarter for West Iredell, which started its fifth season under head coach Monte Simmons.
The game was originally scheduled Friday night but postponed by rain.
West Iredell plays Friday night at home (7:30 p.m.) against South Iredell.
