LINCOLNTON – Burns High eliminated South Fork 2A football champion North Lincoln on Friday night, winning 30-27 in overtime in the third round of the state 2AA playoffs to snap the Knights’ win streak at 12 games.
Sixth-seeded Burns (11-3) earns a rematch with top-seeded Shelby (12-1) next Friday at 7:30 in the 2AA semifinals in Shelby.
Shelby advanced Friday with a 42-7 home victory over No. 12 West Lincoln (10-4), also from the South Fork 2A.
The Burns-Shelby winner reaches the state 2AA title game on Dec. 14 at Wake Forest and will face No. 7 Salisbury (11-2) or No. 1 Randleman (13-0), who play next Friday in Randleman for the East 2AA title.
North Lincoln finished 12-2 after having won 12 straight games under head coach Nick Bazzle after falling 29-28 in overtime at Parkwood in the first game of the year.
