CRAWDADS: Walks in 12th inning spark Delmarva’s 1-run victory

The Crawdads are 20-35 heading into Saturday’s game at Delmarva (Md.) against the Shorebirds (23-30).

DELMARVA, Md. – Two walks led to Delmarva (Md.) scoring a run in the 12th inning on Friday night to edge visiting Hickory 6-5 in South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball.

Alejandro Juvier walked with one out and advanced on a wild pitch by Reid Anderson in the 12th inning. After Ryan McKenna walked, Cole Billingsley’s walk-off double scored the winning run for the Shorebirds (23-30).

Both teams had seven hits in a game attended by 3,252 with Carlos Garay leading Hickory with two hits and Ricardo Valencia, Jose Almonte and Miguel Aparicio each collecting an RBI for the Crawdads (20-35).

Billingsley went 2-for-6 for Delmarva and Preston Palmerio drove in two runs, one with a solo home run (his seventh of the season) in the seventh inning.

Anderson took the loss for Hickory, going 2 1/3 innings. He gave up one hit, one run, walked three and struck out two.

Steven Klimek (3-1), who threw strikes on 16 of his 21 pitches, got the win. He went two innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.

Matt Ball was the Crawdads starter and Lucas Humpal started for the Shorebirds.

Ball pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up five hits, five runs (all earned) with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Humpal pitched seven innings, allowing five hits, five runs (four earned) with a walk and four strikeouts.

The series continues Saturday night in Delmarva.
