DELMARVA, Md. – Back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Franklin Rollins and Yanio Perez in the ninth inning lifted Hickory to an 8-6 victory over Delmarva (Md.) to close a South Atlantic League (SAL) baseball series on Sunday afternoon.
Scoring two runs in the sixth inning for a 6-all tie, the Crawdads (22-35) won after Miguel Aparicio reached on an error by Shorebirds shortstop Chris Clare, took second on a balk, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Blaine Prescott in the ninth inning. Rollins, who went 3-for-5 with two doubles, then doubled to score Aparicio for a 7-6 lead and Perez, who went 2-for-5, drove in Rollins for a two-run lead.
Crawdads reliever Nick Dignaccio, who went 1 2/3 innings, got Delmarva (23-32) in order in the ninth inning and gained a win before a crowd of 2,539.
Hickory — two games back of Delmarva and in last place in the Northern Division — is off on Monday before starting a home series against Southern Division-leading Greenville (S.C.) on Tuesday night.
On Sunday, the Crawdads were down 2-1 through three innings and took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. The Shorebirds scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 5-4 lead.
Delmarva added a run in the fifth inning, going up 6-4, before Hickory tied it with two runs in the sixth inning.
Frank Crinella had two doubles and an RBI, Cole Billingsley went 2-for-2 and added three walks and Daniel Fajardo had two hits and an RBI for Delmarva.
Hickory starting pitcher Kyle Cody worked five innings. He gave up seven hits, six runs (two earned) with two walks and four strikeouts.
Francisco Jimenez (3-1) took the loss for the Shorebirds, going 2 2/3 innings. He gave up three hits, two runs (none earned) and walked three.
