ROCK HILL, S.C. – Ignacio de Goya was named the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year in men’s soccer on Wednesday, giving Lenoir-Rhyne University back-to-back winners of the award.

de GOYA

In a vote of league coaches, de Goya followed Ismael Noumansana of the Bears as the league’s top player.

A junior midfielder from Madrid, Spain, de Goya leads four LRU picks on the league’s first-team all-conference unit. Other Bears picked were junior midfielder Florian Simon of Oberotterach, Germany; freshman midfielder Victor Cascon of Salamanca, Spain; and senior defender Sercan Cihan of Sundern, Germany.

de Goya ranks second in goals scored (12) and third in total points (27) in the SAC and has earned SAC Player-of-the-Week accolades twice this season.

LRU players making second-team All-SAC were junior defender Emil Tansinda of Sale, England and senior goalkeeper Zach King of Alamonte Springs, Fla.

The Bears (10-3-3, 6-2-2), ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division II, tied for second in the conference regular season race before being eliminated in the conference tournament quarterfinals.

LRU still moved up one spot in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Rankings to second. The top six teams in the region earn bids to the national postseason tournament.

The bids for the national playoffs will be revealed in a selection show at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

HICKORY – Coming off a 20-win season, Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) women’s head basketball coach Tisha England is aiming for even more success this season.

England, a former high school star at Newton-Conover, starts her fifth season as the Red Hawks’ head coach. Her team last season went 21-8 and 14-6 in the conference.

The Red Hawks kick off their season Sunday at the CB Hoops Jamboree in Duluth, Ga. They open the regular season on Nov. 3 at home against North Greenville (S.C.) at 6 p.m.

“I’m competitive, and every year I expect at least 20 wins,” England said in a CVCC preseason press release. “Coming off a good season, I’m just excited for the next challenge.

“I’m excited for the players, even my sophomores coming back. They are looking for even greater seasons.”

This year’s CVCC team features a 12-player roster, including five sophomores and seven freshmen.

Guards Nikkyana McCaskill, Shaniya Lester and Tory Agrusa and forwards Tanisha Wall and Joyous Wilson all return for their sophomore seasons. All five players saw significant playing time last season.

“All five were highly recruited by four-year schools, and to know that they made a decision themselves to come back, get better, get stronger and get their degree — that says a lot about our program,” England said in the press release.

“We work hard to produce student-athletes. I’m excited for them. It’s a strong nucleus. Their bond is even greater. They are holding each other accountable and just helping bring the freshmen up to the expectation and getting them to understand what it’s like to be a college student-athlete.

“They are a special group. Every year, each group is special to my heart. This group right here is truly a blessing to me.”

England has been equally impressed with her incoming freshmen — a group that includes athletes from Charlotte, Kannapolis and Franklin and out-of-state players from Florida and Georgia.

“They are going to surprise a lot of people,” England said. “They are very talented. They still have to work on a lot of fundamentals, but they are going to step up and rise up. The sophomores are causing them to rise up.

“My expectation is causing them to rise up. They can shoot. They can pass. They can dribble. We’ve got a post player who can make great moves.

“Getting them in shape and getting them to understand the pace of college level and the requirements of it is where we are at right now. I have confidence in them that they will succeed.”

The Red Hawks have adopted T.E.A.M. — an acronym which stands for “Together Each Accomplish Much” – as a motto.

“That’s what we are,” England said. “We have to accomplish much as a team. Not one person is greater than the other. We understand that it’s going to take all of us to make sure that we are successful.

“Each one has their own spice. We are putting it all together to make a beautiful cake.”

While she has many on-court goals for her team, England – CVCC’s Learning Assistance Center Coordinator — places even more emphasis off the court.

“Every year, our goal, especially academic, is to have a 3.0 (GPA) as a team,” she said. “We have reached that the last several years. To make sure that my young ladies graduate to get to the next level — that’s always our goal each year.”

England is confident her team will contend for a conference championship this season.

“I’m very confident,” she said. “I’m a competitor myself, and I feel that we can win the conference. We just have to apply everything and put it all together there on the court.

“Every year, I expect to win the conference. I’ve had some disappointments, but it’s not a dead end.

“I’m excited about a new year and new season and new challenge for these young ladies and for myself.”

BOLIVIA – Catawba Valley Community College added its sixth straight Region X championship in women’s volleyball on Saturday to its run of six consecutive conference titles.

The Red Hawks (25-8, 15-0) downed Cape Fear 3-1 at Brunswick Community College.

Freshman Karsyn Mundy paced CVCC with 11 kills in the match, while sophomore Leslie Leonard added 10 kills and 3 1/2 blocks.

Defensively, CVCC’s Emily Williams tallied a team-best 22 digs and Emilee Webber chipped in 16 digs and made a team-high 31 assists.

Saturday’s win was the second in as many days for CVCC, which defeated Wake Tech Community College 3-0 in Raleigh on Friday afternoon behind seven kills each from Leonard and Sabrina Pinard.

The Red Hawks, whose win streak is now at seven, complete their regular season on Monday with a non-conference contest at Montreal College.

CVCC opens Region X/District P tournament play Friday at 1 p.m. at Brunswick Community College against Guilford Tech.

The semifinals and championship rounds are also scheduled at Brunswick Community College on Saturday.

The winner of the tournament will represent Region X/District P in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division tournament in Charleston, W.Va., starting Nov. 16.

HICKORY – The Citadel will visit Lenoir-Rhyne University on Sunday afternoon to play the Bears in an exhibition basketball game to raise funds for hurricane relief.

The school’s men’s teams tip off at 3 p.m. in Shuford Gym all game proceeds will go to a hurricane relief fund set up by the American Red Cross to help those affected in Florida and Puerto Rico by recent hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

Tickets for Sunday’s exhibition are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 12 and under. All LRU students, faculty and staff with ID get in free.

The game was made possible due to a special waiver the NCAA is granting NCAA Division I schools. Similar games have been added across the nation in recent days. The waiver allows programs to add a second exhibition game as long as all proceeds go to relief efforts.

Sunday’s exhibition will be the first time LRU has played host to an NCAA Division I school in an exhibition (almost all contests against those schools are on the road).

LRU last played an NCAA Division I school in an exhibition in early November of 2015, visiting Davidson.

The Bears, under second-year mentor Everick Sullivan, returns senior guards Reed Lucas and Jarvis Calhoun. Lucas averaged 13.0 points per game and hit 69 3-pointers while Calhoun averaged 9.9 points and hit 58 treys.

The Citadel, a member of the Southern Conference, returns Preston Parks, the league freshman of the year who averaged a team-high 18.1 points last season.

The hurricane relief touches home for several members of the Bulldogs men’s basketball team as sophomore Leandro Allende hails from Puerto Rico while freshmen Rob Johnson and Derek Webster, Jr., are both from the state of Florida.

LRU’s men opener their season Nov. 10 against UNC Pembroke on the road with a 3 p.m. start as part of the SAC/Peach Belt Conference Challenge.

HICKORY – Brooke Redmond and Bailey Cloninger led the Lenoir-Rhyne women to a 3-0 sweep of visiting Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, evening the Bears’ overall record at 10-10.

Redmond had nine kills and 12 digs and Cloninger added 18 assists and 10 digs as the Bears won 25-23, 25-18, 27-25 in a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) match in Shuford Gym.

The loss dropped Lincoln Memorial to 12-12, 7-9.

Kiera Holland led Lincoln Memorial with 13 kills but the Railsplitters’ hitting average was .156 and they made eight service errors.

The victory gave the Bears a sweep of the season series.

Redmond and freshman Taylor Prall (seven kills) are now each past 200 kills for the season. Redmond has 210 and Prall has 201.

LRU’s next match is Tuesday at home, a 7 p.m. SAC match against league-leading Anderson, S.C.

MAIDEN – Quarterback Keygan Mayfield was sure he’d find his buddy at the end of the 82 yards Maiden High needed to beat visiting Newton-Conover in the closing minutes on Friday night.

“I just had so much confidence in our players and in our team,” Mayfield said in a postgame radio interview. “I just believed in us.”

Directing a dramatic drive before a standing room-only crowd at Thomas E. Brown Stadium, Mayfield found receiver Caleb McDaniel for a game-winning TD with 25.2 seconds to play as the Blue Devils nipped the Red Devils 30-27 in a showdown for first place in South Fork 2A football.

Maiden (10-0, 6-0) clinched at least a share of the league title heading into a Friday game at 7:30 p.m. at Lincolnton, where the Blue Devils need to win to grab their first outright conference football title since 2004.

Newton-Conover (8-2, 5-1) meets East Lincoln, also 5-1 in the league, in Newton at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. The game will decide second place or give the winner a co-title if Lincolnton beats Maiden.

The game-winner in Brown Stadium came on McDaniel’s 12th catch of the night, and he finished with 160 receiving yards.

The Red Devils led 27-23 after Allen Wilfong’s 5-yard run and a PAT by Francisco Tapia with 8:44 to play.

Eventually, the 48th game in the storied series came down to the final 50 seconds when Maiden had the ball first-and-goal at the Red Devils 8.

Newton-Conover’s Shamar Baker knocked down a pass on first down, and Mayfield overthrew a receiver on second down.

After the Red Devils took a timeout prior to third down, a penalty pushed Maiden back to the 28, setting up Mayfield looking and finding McDaniel again.

The TD throw made it 29-27 before Casey Ly added the PAT to give Maiden a 30-27 lead.

Newton-Conover got the kickoff and ran two plays, but it was all over after an incomplete pass with seven seconds left on the clock.

Maiden head coach Will Byrne, who starred during his career in a one-point win (2000) by Maiden over the Red Devils, said he was confident his team would deliver on the last possession and win.

Asked in a postgame interview what he told the Blue Devils when they had 82 yards to navigate if they wanted to win, he said: “‘We’re going downfield and you’re going to win,’” Byrne said. “They were saying it before I was saying it.

“That’s the type of mentality they all have. That’s a testament to the kind of kids we’ve got … I’m just proud of this group. They have a never give up attitude. They’re unbelievable.”

In one of the tightest and most exciting game in a series that Maiden now leads 26-21-1, it came down to virtually who had the ball last.

The Red Devils grabbed an early 7-0 lead when Baker scored on a 2-yard run with 7:06 to play in the first quarter and Tapia hit a PAT.

About 4 ½ minutes later, Mayfield scored on a 3-yard run and, after the PAT failed, Newton-Conover led 7-6.

Baker found Jaheim Mullen for a 78-yard TD pass with 7:23 left before the half. The Red Devils went for two points but failed and they lead 13-7.

The Mayfield-to-McDaniel connection collected a game-tying score with no time on the clock, a 33-yard play that set up Ly’s PAT for a 13-all tie.

About four minutes into the second half, Mayfield hit McDaniel on a 16-yard TD pass and Ly added the PAT to put Maiden ahead 20-13.

Less than three minutes later, Baker threw 24 yards to Mullen, who had three catches for 106 yards, and Tapia’s PAT netted a tie at 20.

Ly kicked a 28-yard field goal with 10:31 left to play for a three-point Maiden lead that lasted less than two minutes.

Baker, who had 227 passing yards on 11 completions, directed a drive that got Newton-Conover back in front, leaving Maiden with the ball and a challenge.

McDaniel said in a postgame interview that he wanted to win badly, as he felt the Blue Devils weren’t expected to win.

“We just play hard every time,” McDaniel said. “We knew we could come in and win it.”

McDaniel took a hard hit and came out for a play before going back into the lineup.

“I said I was gonna go in and try to get the game-winner,” he said. “I just got all hyped up (during the week) because everybody was doubting us.”

Beating Newton-Conover for the 16th time at Maiden in 23 games there (16-6-1), the Blue Devils reached 10 wins in a season for the 25th time in school history. They’ll gain their 22nd straight postseason bid next weekend.

HICKORY – Putting together two scoring drives in the final three minutes, Hickory High continued its season-long rebound from its past football struggles and knocked off previously unbeaten Alexander Central 38-28 at Barger Stadium on Friday night.

The Red Tornadoes — who had won four of 33 games in the previous three seasons – improved to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the Northwestern 3A-4A – with another victory under head coach Russell Stone.

Stone, known for bringing a steady hand to and rebuilding programs, picked up career win No. 269 when the Red Tornadoes won despite being outgained 489-363.

The victory gives Hickory a shot at finishing no worse than tied for second place in the league if it wins Friday’s 7:30 p.m. game at archrival St. Stephens. If the Indians win, Hickory could end up in third place or in a tie for third place.

The Red Tornadoes currently share second place with Watauga, both trailing the Cougars (9-1, 5-1), who had already wrapped up at least a co-championship.

Alexander Central needs a win on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at South Caldwell to win an outright conference title.

The loss prevented the Cougars from reaching 10 wins in a season for the third time in school history.

Alexander Central led 28-24 after Tevin Clark scored on a 2-yard run with two minutes, 46 seconds left in the third quarter.

Hickory won by driving 62 yards in 1:25 to go up 31-28. The Red Tornadoes then drove 38 yards in 61 seconds for the final score, a 14-yard run by quarterback Derrien Phillips. He threw 33 yards to Antonio Parks for the go-ahead TD.

Phillips rushed 19 times for 121 yards and two scores and completed six passes for 110 yards and three TDs – one to Parks, one to Kasey Hardin and one to Jaekwon Staton – as Hickory reached seven wins in a season for the first time since 2012.

Devon Weiss ran 25 times for 170 yards and three scores for Alexander Central, which outgained Hickory by 126 yards, and that included 54 rushes for 368 yards. Bryson Godfrey added 113 yards on 14 carries and quarterback Gunnar Anderson ran 14 times for 83 yards and threw for 121 yards but no TDs.

The game featured only two turnovers – each team had a pass intercepted – and 17 penalties for 180 yards. Each team punted only three times.

Hickory led 17-7 by halftime after Phillips scored on an 11-yard run, hit Staton for a 20-yard TD and Harrison Boston kicked a 26-yard field goal.

Weiss had the Cougars’ only first-half score with a 4-yard TD run with 2:12 to go in the opening quarter.

Alexander Central closed within 17-14 when Weiss scored on a run of 17 yards, but Hickory answered that when Phillips threw 24 yards to Hardin to lead 24-13.

Weiss ran 10 yards for a TD with 7:53 left in the third quarter and Anderson ran for a two-point conversion, closing the Cougars within 24-21.

Eventually, each team had reached the red zone four times and produced eight TDs while there.

Hickory ran for 245 yards and threw for 118.

Hardin was a defensive force for the Red Tornadoes with 11 tackles and eight assists. Elijah Milsaps and J.J. Rutherford each added seven tackles and A.J. Chilsom added six.

The Cougars’ Jordan Brown had a team-high 12 tackles, Clark made nine tackles and Lyndon Strickland and Isaac Chapman had six each. Two of Strickland’s hits were for lost yardage and Chapman was credited with 2 ½ tackles for lost yardage.

HICKORY’S HISTORY

Hickory High can finish no worse than third – and as high as a league co-champion or tied for second place – based on its outcome Friday at archrival St. Stephens. A look at the Red Tornaodes’ conference finishes in the previous 10 seasons:

STATESVILLE – Still playing in a high gear, Hibriten High remained unbeaten in varsity football on Friday night.

The visiting Panthers crushed West Iredell 48-0 to stay in a tie for first place in the Northwestern Foothills 2A with Patton, setting up a battle with the Panthers for the league title on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Hibriten.

Hayden Wike ran for two TDs, helping Hibriten gain a 21-0 lead, and five other Panthers scored as they improved to 10-0, 5-0 and reach 10 wins for the 10th time in school history.

Wike opened the scoring on a 22-yard run and McKinley Witherspoon followed with a 13-yard TD run. Wike’s 1-yard run, after the Warriors (5-5, 3-2) fumbled a punt, gave West Iredell a three-score lead.

Syklen Thomas added a TD run and Charles Tassinari returned an interception for a score to boost Hibriten’s lead to 35-0.

Taylib Howell’s run and an interception return for a TD by Shrine Bowl-bound Miles Simon closed the scoring.

Hibriten won for the fourth straight time over West Iredell and the Panthers have also won four straight at West Iredell.

The Panthers are 24-1 in their last 25 games, improving head coach Clay Lewis’ record to 67-22. He’s in his eighth year in a program that has been a model of consistency in the last decade.

The loss dropped West Iredell to 5-5 and to 3-2 in the league. The Warriors are tied for third with Fred T. Foard and meet the Tigers in Newton at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.

West Iredell has had five straight losing seasons, hasn’t won more than five games since 2011 and is trying to earn its first postseason bid in six seasons.

ICARD – Fred T. Foard High’s 1-2-3 punch knocked out East Burke 49-6 on Friday night in Northwestern Foothills 2A football.

Getting just shy of 340 rushing yards from running backs Corey Siemer and Tate Beaver and quarterback Jack Colosimo, the Tigers (7-3, 3-2) reached seven wins in a season for the 10th time in school history.

Siemer led the way with 173 yards and Beaver and Colosimo each added 83 as the Tigers ran for 400 yards.

Foard plays West Iredell at home Friday night to break a tie for third place in the league standings with a kickoff at 7:30 p.m. in Newton.

The Tigers have not won eight or more games since going 9-3 in 2008 and they’ve won eight or more only three others times since 1980 – in 1980-83.

East Burke (1-9, 0-5) closes the regular season at Draughn at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night and will miss the postseason for the sixth time in eight seasons.

Foard, moving within a win over evening second-year head coach Derrick Minor’s record at 11-11, jumped to a 28-0 lead by halftime against East Burke.

Colosimo threw a scoring pass to Gavin Shoemaker for the first score and Beaver returned an interception for another TD for an early lead.

Siemer ran for two touchdowns – on runs of 44 and 66 yards in the second quarter – for a 28-0 lead.

When Colosimo broke an 83-yard run for a TD and Beaver tacked on a 50-yard scoring run with about eight minutes to go in the third quarter, Foard was up 42-0.

After Grant Fulbright scored East Burke’s only TD, the Tigers closed the scoring with about 7 ½ minutes to play on a TD run by Cameron Librado.

Foard’s defense held the Cavs to fewer than 120 yards and less than 35 rushing.

The Tigers had won once in five previous visits to East Burke.

THE TIGERS CAN…

Foard is three wins away from its first 10-win year since 1982 — the only double-figure win season in school history — and getting there will take beating West Iredell and winning two state playoff games.

The Tigers have only two state playoff wins in school history, over Franklkin and Southwest Guilford in 1982. Those wins were in the now-defunct Division II bracket the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) experimented with in the early 1980s.

Those playoffs were designed for teams that didn’t reach the traditional state playoff bracket, and Foard won the West 2A title in Division II in 1982 under head coach Dick Foster.

The 28-25 road win over Southwest Guilford was Foard’s last postseason win, as the Tigers have lost in the first round 11 times since then.

Foard, 2-12 all-time in the postseason, has been at home for state playoff games only three times – 1981 against Swain County, 1983 against Sylva-Webster and in 2008 against North Buncombe.

HUNTERSVILLE – Bandys High fell just shy of 500 yards on offense on Friday night as it inched closer to a .500 record with a 42-16 victory on the road over Lake Norman Charter.

Facing the Knights for the first time in varsity football, the Trojans (4-6, 2-4) ran for 336 yards on 42 carries — with Ethan Howard and Ja’Tay Culliver providing 209 yards — to keep alive hopes of reaching the postseason for the 23rd time in school history.

Bandys outgained the Knights 486-235.

Howard ran for 114 yards on 15 carries and a TD while Culliver had four carries for 95 yards and a TD, two catches for 92 yards and a TD and a kickoff return TD. Quarterback Lake Hojnacki threw for 151 yards and two scores for the Trojans.

Bandys fell behind 7-0 in the opening quarter but scored four times in the second quarter to lead 28-10 at the half.

Howard broke a run for 41 yards for the Trojans’ first score. Hojnacki threw 21 yards for a TD and Ben Joseph’s two-point run put Bandys up 14-7.

After Lake Norman Charter (3-7, 0-6) kicked a field goal, Culliver returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score and then added an 80-yard rushing TD for Bandys.

Culliver caught a 63-yard scoring pass from Hojnacki in the third quarter and Elijah Clarke had a 20-yard TD run for the Trojans in the fourth quarter.

Bandys overcame three lost fumbles and 14 penalties for 116 yards to pick up head coach Trent Lowman’s 22nd career victory.

The Trojans close the regular season at home on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., facing North Lincoln.

Lake Norman Charter closes its season Friday, also at 7:30 p.m., by going to West Lincoln.

MORGANTON – Holding Freedom to minus rushing yardage, visiting Watauga hammered the Patriots 42-0 in Northwestern 3A-4A high school football on Friday night to again reach eight wins under head coach Ryan Habich.

The Pioneers (8-2, 4-2) were dominant as they beat the Patriots (6-4, 3-3) for only the fifth time since 1981 and far outdistanced their previous win margins of 28, 19, seven and six points in the series.

Running back Bryce Satterfield scored twice and rushed 21 times for 99 yards to lead Watauga, which is tied for second with Hickory heading into Friday’s regular season finales.

Watauga plays West Caldwell in Boone of Friday at 7:30 p.m. while Freedom travels to McDowell for a conference game.

The Pioneers got two TD runs from quarterback Anderson Castle in their shutout win, their third victory Morganton in 16 games.

Watauga led 21-0 at the half after Castle scored on a 4-yard run, Satterfield scored from the 1 and Zachary West scored on a 28-yard run.

West had a 43-yard TD run in the third quarter, when Castle also ran 12 yards for a score, and Castle capped the scoring with a 1-yard TD run in the final quarter.

Watauga had 414 yards on offense (360 rushing) and the Patriots were limited to 140 yards as their rushing total was 18 carries for minus-8 yards.

Freedom quarterback Jayden Birchfield completed 22 of 34 passes for 148 yards, throwing nine times to Tristan Sommerville for 60 yards.

All five Watauga teams coached by Habich have now won at least eight games, and a win over West Caldwell would produce back-to-back nine-win teams for the Pioneers.

Freedom needs a win over McDowell to have won seven games in seven of the last eight years. The Patriots went 6-6 last season.

Watauga is expected to get into the state playoffs for the seventh straight season and for the 11th time in 12 years.

HUDSON – Xavian King ran for three scores, including the first two on Friday night, as visiting St. Stephens High rolled 56-7 over South Caldwell in a Northwestern 3A-4A football game.

King, who ran for nearly 160 yards, helped the Indians (4-6, 3-3) – still vying to get into the state playoffs – even their conference record with one regular season game to go.

St. Stephens, tied for fourth place with Freedom and West Caldwell, closes the regular season at home Friday at 7:30 p.m. against archrival Hickory.

The Indians got ahead of the Spartans (1-9, 1-5) early when King scored on two 3-yard runs and Zach Lee caught a two-point conversion pass from quarterback Justin Bullock for a 14-0 edge.

St. Stephens led 35-7 by halftime after Bullock threw a scoring pass to Chance Benfield, Benfield returned an interception for a TD and King tacked on an 18-yard scoring run.

Those three scores came after Austin Raynor had scored on a 1-yard run for South Caldwell a few seconds into the second quarter.

The second-half scoring for the Indians came on Bullock’s 59-yard hookup with Teavius Henry, a 3-yard run by Bullock and Blake Baker’s 2-yard TD run.

St. Stephens’ defense limited the Spartans to fewer than 70 yards rushing, and the Indians forced five turnovers (two fumbles, three interceptions).

Bullock threw for 155 yards for the Indians and Henry had four catches for 105 yards.

While St. Stephens needs to beat Hickory for the third time in four seasons to strengthen its chances of landing a postseason bid, South Caldwell is already in.

Since South Caldwell and McDowell are the only 4A schools in the Northwestern 3A-4A, the Spartans get the league’s 4A bid via having beaten McDowell.

The Spartans’ regular season finale under first-year head coach Marc Kirkpatrick is at home Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against Alexander Central.

Because statewide realignment impacted home-and-away scheduling, Alexander Central will play in Hudson for the second straight season.

The Cougars’ head coach is Butch Carter, now in his second season in that job. He spent the previous 15 seasons as South Caldwell’s head coach.

LINCOLNTON – Tyshaun Harris had the biggest rushing game in Lincolnton High football history on Friday night, and Lincolnton need every one of those yards to hold off North Lincoln in a South Fork 2A game.

Harris ran 25 times for 318 yards and scored four times as the Wolves outlasted the Knights 56-41. He was not in the starting lineup due to disciplinary reasons, The Gaston Gazette reported.

Once on the field, Harris ran for TDs of 64, 36, 3 and 34 yards as the Wolves (5-5, 4-2) reached .500 and they’re in fourth place in the conference.

Harris’ big night broke a single-game rushing record for Lincolnton – and also for Lincoln County – that was previously held by the Wolves’ Brandon Wilson, The Gazette reported. Wilson had 302 yards in 2010 when Lincolnton beat Polk County in a third-round state playoff game.

Lincolnton gained a lead over North Lincoln (2-8, 1-5) at 21-12 on Harris’ 36-yard TD run and stayed in front the rest of the way.

Running back Clayton Cribb’s 8-yard TD run got the Knights within eight points once and quarterback Reed McRorie later had a 1-yard run that got North Lincoln within eight points for a second time.

Lincolnton closed it out, though, when Terrell McClain scored on a 15-yard run in the final 30 seconds.

The Wolves were up only 28-26 at halftime, then widened their lead to 16 points via 1-yard TD runs by McClain and Caden Wyatt in the third quarter.

McRorie threw for 304 yards in the loss, completing 20 of 30 attempts that included nine throws to DaeKwon Camp for 214 yards.

Wyatt had 95 yards rushing for the Wolves in a game that had a combined 943 yards of total offense (Lincolnton 531, North Lincoln 412).

The victory gives Lincolnton 17 straight years of winning at least five games and improved the Wolves’ chances of getting to the state playoffs for the 17th consecutive season.

Lincolnton’s regular season finale is Friday at 7:30 p.m. at home against unbeaten Maiden.

North Lincoln travels to Bandys on Friday at 7:30 p.m., also for a South Fork 2A game.

DENVER, N.C. – Going to overtime for the second straight game, East Lincoln High picked up an important South Fork 2A football victory over visiting West Lincoln 42-35 on Friday night.

The Mustangs rallied from a 21-point deficit to eventually win in overtime on a 1-yard TD run by running back Chandler Jones and gain a share of second place with Newton-Conover.

East Lincoln (6-4, 5-1) plays at Newton-Conover (8-2, 5-1) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. If Lincolnton were to upset Maiden, the winner at Gurley Stadium would end up a co-champion in the conference.

Unbeaten Maiden stayed that way last Friday night by downing visiting East Lincoln 44-43 in double overtime.

West Lincoln (3-7, 1-5) had a possession after Jones’ fourth-and-1 TD run in overtime put the Mustangs in front.

The Rebels had nine yards on three plays and was at the 1 with one play to try to tie the game again. Quarterback Seth Willis got the call, trying to sneak in, but the middle of the East Lincoln defense stopped him to end the game.

West Lincoln had East Lincoln down 28-7 at the half, but the Mustangs rallied.

Jones scored on a run after the second half kickoff to start the push, and an 81-yard TD run by Tavin Johnson midway through the third quarter helped East Lincoln climb back.

West Lincoln scored on a 49-yard run by Brendan Ikard to stay ahead at 28-21 but did not score again in regulation.

East Lincoln pulled even when quarterback Chase Jones threw 41 yards to Gabe Duncan for a TD with two minutes, 35 seconds left in regulation.

The Rebels got a final chance to win in regulation by recovering a fumbled punt at the Mustangs’ 45 but turned the ball over on downs as the game headed to an extra period.

West Lincoln fell despite a game-high 204 yards on 31 carries by Ikard and with running back Nakathon Phansook adding 27 carries for 15 yards.

The Rebels have one regular-season game left, playing Friday at home against last-place Lake Norman Charter.

West Lincoln is tied for sixth place with North Lincoln.

HICKORY – Lenoir-Rhyne University’s women’s volleyball team is under .500 as it approaches its 20th match of the season.

Visiting Carson-Newman clipped the Bears 3-2 on Friday night at Shuford Memorial Gym – 13-25, 25-22, 25-16, 14-25, 15-10 – to leave LRU at 9-10 overall and 5-8 in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).

Freshman Taylor Prall’s 17 kills led LRU. She added 16 digs.

The Bears also got double-doubles in the loss from Brooke Redmond, Bailey Cloninger and Jessica Funk.

Carson-Newman improved to 13-10, 8-7 behind Marnie Streeter, who had 20 kills, and Anna Patton, who had 37 assists and six kills.

LRU has lost eight of nine conference matches since a 4-0 start while Carson-Newman’s win streak is at five.

The Bears have a home conference match on Saturday at 2 p.m., facing Lincoln Memorial.

Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men’s Basketball Team will host The Citadel on Sunday, October 29, at 3:00 p.m., in Shuford Memorial Gymnasium. All proceeds for the exhibition will go to the hurricane relief fund set up by The American Red Cross to help those affected in Florida and Puerto Rico by recent hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.

The game was made possible due to a special waiver the NCAA is granting NCAA Division I schools. Similar games have been added across the nation in recent days. The waiver allows programs to add a second exhibition game as long as all proceeds go to relief efforts.

This marks the first time ever Lenoir-Rhyne has hosted an NCAA Division I school in an exhibition (almost all contests against D-I schools are on the road). Lenoir-Rhyne last played an NCAA Division I school in an exhibition on Saturday, November 7, 2015, against Davidson in Davidson, N.C.

That same year, Lenoir-Rhyne took Clemson to double overtime before falling by an 87-84 score on Thursday, December 5, 2015, in Greenville, S.C.

Tickets prices are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 12 and under. All Lenoir-Rhyne students, faculty and staff with ID get in free.

Lenoir-Rhyne, under second-year mentor Everick Sullivan, returns senior guards Reed Lucas (Greensboro, N.C.) and Jarvis Calhoun (Birmingham, Ala.). Lucas averaged 13.0 points per game and hit 69 three-pointers while Calhoun averaged 9.9 points per outing and hit 58 treys.

The Citadel, a member of the Southern Conference, returns Preston Parks (Greenville, S.C.), the league freshman of the year who averaged a team-high 18.1 points per outing.

The hurricane relief touches home for several members of the Bulldogs men’s basketball team as sophomore Leandro Allende hails from Puerto Rico while freshmen Rob Johnson and Derek Webster, Jr., are both from the state of Florida.

Lenoir-Rhyne opens the 2017-18 campaign on Friday, November 10, against UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C., at 3:00 p.m., as part of the South Atlantic Conference/Peach Belt Conference Challenge.

Lake Norman Charter Knights (11-5-2, 9-3-1 conference) vs. West Lincoln Rebels (7-13-1, 2-12-0 conference)

West Lincoln – 0

LNCS – 8

Lake Norman Charter overwhelmed West Lincoln 8-0 in a South Fork conference matchup for the Knights’ senior night at home Wednesday. The Knights got on the board twice early: In the fifth minute Joe Wessler crossed from the right side to Sloan Schwarzenegger at the near post. Schwarzenegger finished from point-blank range. Less than a minute later Luke Mostert sent the ball in right-to-left, crossing the entire penalty area. Riley Benz received it, took one touch, and sent it to the upper 90 on the opposite side of the goal. In the sixteenth minute Cole Rasenberger made a 40-yard run, breaking down the Rebels’ defense and scoring unassisted. Twelve minutes later Jordan Hall made a run and had a nice give-and-go combo with Connor Hahn before flicking the ball to Luke Mostert, who blasted it into the net. Five minutes later Hall scored his own, by taking a Hahn corner kick, taking one touch back inside and finishing low with a left-footed shot. With eleven seconds left in the first half Elijah Corbin had a close shot deflected down by the Rebels’ goalkeeper Logan Garcia. Rasenberger pounced on the ball and finished it off. Early in the second half, Benz found himself with the ball after the Rebels failed to clear and rocketed a shot into the top of the net from 18 yards out. The Knights finished their scoring with ten minutes remaining when Dennis Roedlich crossed the ball into the penalty area from the left side. Adam Eichman sent a gorgeous back-heel flick into the side netting. Adam Kennedy and Landon Mckee combined for the shutout in the Knights’ goal.
