Watauga High’s girls surprised league-leading Hickory on Tuesday night in Boone, beating the Red Tornadoes 1-0 in Northwestern 3A-4A soccer.
Watauga improved to 6-2-2 in the league and left Hickory at 9-2-0. The Red Tornadoes remain in first place.
Watauga plays Friday at 6:30 p.m. at South Caldwell, with Hickory facing Hibriten at Hickory on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Hibriten 8, Patton 0: At Hibriten, the Panthers won to improve to 6-3-2 in the Northwestern 3A-4A.
Three teams in the league – Hibriten, South Caldwell and Watauga – each have six conferene wins. They are behind Fred T. Foard (7-3-0) and Hickory in the standings.
Hibriten’s next match is Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Hickory, while Patton has a non-league match scheduled Wednesday at 6 p.m. at home against Draughn before facing Freedom at Patton at 6 p.m. on Friday.
South Iredell 4, North Iredell 0: South Iredell inched closer to winning a North Piedmont 3A-4A soccer title.
The Vikings defeated North Iredell 4-0 on the road, improving to 11-0-0 in conference play and opening a 2 ½ game edge over second-place (and idle) Lake Norman with three league matches to go.
Lake Norman’s home match against Mooresville (7-3) was postponed by rain on Tuesday and is scheduled for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Wildcats are 8-2-0 in league play.
A win by South Iredell or loss by Lake Norman will clinch no worse than a share of the league title for the Vikings, whose next match is at home Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against winless Statesville.
North Iredell, now 6-5-0 in the league, is in fourth place and next plays Thursday at 6 p.m. at Mooresville.
West Iredell 3, North Lincoln 2: At West Iredell, the Warriors clipped the Knights in a North Piedmont 3A-4A match.
West Iredell improved to 4-6-1 and is in fifth place, while North Lincoln (3-7-1) dropped into sixth place.
Alexander Central visits West Iredell for a league match on Friday and North Lincoln is on the road Friday to face league foe Lake Norman at 6;30 p.m.
