NEWBERRY, S.C. – Zack Kelly pitched a six-hit shutout, striking out nine, as Newberry (S.C.) trimmed visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University 3-0 in an opening game Friday of a South Atlantic Conference (SAC) baseball series.
Newberry (29-19, 14-8) extended the Bears’ losing streak to five games. LRU is now 21-24, 6-16.
The teams play a doubleheader Saturday in Newberry, S.C., at 1 p.m. to close out the series.
Kelly improved to 7-3 with his victory.
Newberry was up 1-0 when it pumped its lead to three runs in the eighth inning. Tommy Passerello’s RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth gave Newberry the lead, and Ben Herring’s RBI double highlighted a two-run eighth.
Thomas St. Clair (9-4) took the loss for the Bears. He allowed two runs and pitched eight innings before John Curtis struck out two in relief.
