CAUSBY CLASSIC: Bandys, East Burke snap skids with Day 2 victories

MORGANTON – R-S Central High stayed hot and two teams stopped losing streaks of five games or longer to highlight the second day of the Tony Causby Classic.

The Hilltoppers won for the ninth time in 10 games when they beat Freedom 8-3 in a semifinal at Freedom due to a forecast for rain.

The Trojans scored a season-high 11 runs on Tuesday, beating Chase to snap a seven-game losing streak.

In games at Patton, Bandys downed Chase 11-1 in five innings and East Burke edged West Caldwell 5-3 in consolation games.

In the other semifinal, host Patton reached the championship game by beating Draughn 4-3.

R-S Central (15-3) and Patton (7-13) meet in the title game at Patton on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

In other games at Patton, it’s Freedom (5-12) against Draughn (11-6) for third place at 4:30 p.m., East Burke (3-15) against Bandys (4-14-1) for fifth place at 2 p.m., and West Caldwell (8-10) faces Chase (1-16) for seventh place at 11:30 a.m.

R-S Central opened a 7-0 lead on Freedom after two innings while East Burke had a three-run fifth inning in its win over West Caldwell that snapped a five-game losing streak.

Bandys had lost seven straight since beating Newton-Conover 5-0 on March 28 and the Trojans topped 10 runs in a game for the first time this season. Previously they had scored 10 in losses to West Caldwell and Lincoln Charter.
